Cornell at Penn

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Cornell Big Red delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Penn Quakers 39-17 on Saturday at Franklin Field, snapping a three-game home winning streak for Penn and defying both the oddsmakers and statistical projections.

Entering the game as a 10.5-point underdog and given less than a 15 percent chance to win by some analytics systems, Cornell improved to 4-4 overall. Penn, which saw its record fall to 5-3, was unable to contain a relentless and balanced Cornell offense that amassed over 400 total yards.

The game was a tale of two halves, with the first being a defensive struggle and the second a scoring explosion from the visitors. After a first quarter that yielded only a 32-yard field goal from Caden Lesiewicz, the Big Red began to find its rhythm.

Penn responded early in the second quarter with a methodical 16-play, 75-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes of clock. Quakers quarterback Liam O’Brien of Boulder, Colorado, capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, giving Penn a brief 7-3 lead.

Cornell answered with a field goal to pull within one point and then seized momentum just before halftime. Quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio engineered a masterful two-minute drill, culminating in a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Lee with 11 seconds remaining. The score sent the Big Red into the locker room with a 13-10 lead and all the momentum.

That momentum turned into a tidal wave in the third quarter as Cornell scored 19 unanswered points. Jordan Triplett of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, started the onslaught with a 3-yard touchdown run. On Cornell’s next possession, Gannon Carothers of Pittsburgh broke loose for a 22-yard scoring run. Carothers then punched in another touchdown from one yard out late in the quarter to extend the lead to 32-10.

Penn’s lone bright spot of the second half came on the ensuing kickoff, as running back Donte West of Forestville, Maryland, exploded for a 75-yard touchdown run. West was a standout for the Quakers, rushing for 125 yards on 15 carries.

Any hope of a miraculous Penn comeback was extinguished early in the fourth quarter when Bass-Sulpizio scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, his second rushing touchdown of the game, to put the contest out of reach at 39-17.

Bass-Sulpizio was the catalyst for the Cornell offense, delivering an efficient and dynamic performance. The junior from San Diego completed 24 of 31 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown through the air, while also rushing for 29 yards and a score on eight carries. His favorite target was TJ Hamilton of Creedmoor, North Carolina, who hauled in five receptions for 123 yards. The Cornell ground game was equally potent, led by Triplett’s 85 yards and a touchdown and complemented by Carothers’ two scores.

For Penn, O’Brien completed 15 of 22 passes for 112 yards and added 63 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Jared Richardson of Blakeslee, Pennsylvania, was his top receiver with five catches for 42 yards.

The loss deals a significant blow to Penn’s Ivy League title aspirations as they prepare to travel to Harvard next Saturday. Cornell, now riding a three-game winning streak, will look to continue its surge when it visits Dartmouth.
