Yale at Brown
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Josh Pitsenberger rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Dante Reno threw for two more scores to lead Yale to a 34-22 victory over Brown on Saturday at Stevenson Field.
The Bulldogs (6-2) seized control early with two first-quarter touchdowns and never relinquished the lead, handing the Bears (3-5) their third consecutive loss.
Yale’s offense exploded from the opening whistle. On the second play from scrimmage, Pitsenberger broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run just 19 seconds into the game. The Bulldogs extended their lead later in the quarter when Reno connected with Nico Brown on a 12-yard scoring pass, capping a 10-play, 70-yard drive.
Brown’s offense, led by quarterback James Murphy, struggled to find its footing against a stout Yale defense in the opening period. The Bears finally got on the board early in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal from Drew Crabtree.
Yale answered with another efficient drive, culminating in Reno’s second touchdown pass of the day, a 21-yard strike to Nico Brown that pushed the lead to 21-3. Brown managed two more Crabtree field goals before halftime, from 25 and 36 yards, to cut the deficit to 21-9 at the break.
The Bulldogs received the second-half kickoff and methodically extended their lead. A sustained drive was finished by Pitsenberger’s second touchdown, a 1-yard plunge that made the score 28-9.
Murphy and the Bears responded with their most impressive drive of the day. A 43-yard completion to Trevor Foley set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Matt Childs, bringing Brown within 28-16 late in the third quarter.
Yale’s ground game continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, chewing up clock and setting up two Noah Piper field goals, from 33 and 40 yards, to extend the lead to 34-16.
Murphy led a late scoring drive for Brown, finding Ty Pezza for a 55-yard touchdown pass with just over seven minutes remaining to make it 34-22. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Brown’s final efforts to mount a comeback were thwarted by the Yale secondary. Phoenix Grant intercepted Murphy in the fourth quarter, and Joshua Tarver sealed the game with another interception in the final two minutes, allowing Yale to run out the clock.
Murphy finished with 366 yards passing and one touchdown for Brown, but was sacked multiple times and threw two interceptions. Foley was his primary target, hauling in six receptions for 145 yards.
For Yale, Reno was an efficient 20 of 28 for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding 17 yards on the ground. Nico Brown caught six passes for 103 yards and two scores. Wilhelm Daal complemented Pitsenberger’s big day with 67 yards on eight carries.
The Bulldogs’ victory improved their record to 6-2, while Brown fell to 3-5. Yale will travel to face Princeton next Saturday, while Brown will visit Columbia.
