Yale Bulldogs Secure Road Victory Over Brown Bears
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Josh Pitsenberger ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Dante Reno threw for two more scores as Yale built a commanding early lead and held off a second-half push from Brown for a 34-22 victory on Saturday at Stevenson Field.
The Bulldogs, now 6-2, seized control immediately, scoring on the game’s first play from scrimmage. After Joshua Tarver’s 38-yard kickoff return set Yale up at its own 38, Pitsenberger took a handoff and burst through the middle for a 62-yard touchdown just 19 seconds into the contest.
Yale’s offense continued its efficient first-quarter performance on its next drive. Quarterback Dante Reno, a Sturbridge, Massachusetts native, engineered a methodical 10-play, 70-yard march, capping it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nico Brown. The score gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead with 2:10 remaining in the opening quarter.
Brown, which fell to 3-5, finally got on the board early in the second quarter. A drive led by quarterback James Murphy stalled at the Yale 11-yard line, forcing the Bears to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Drew Crabtree.
Yale answered with another Reno-to-Brown connection before the half. This time, the pair linked up for a 21-yard touchdown, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 21-3 with 5:12 left in the second quarter.
The Bears managed two more field goals from Crabtree before the break, one from 25 yards and a 36-yarder as time expired, to cut the deficit to 21-9 at halftime.
Yale reasserted its dominance on the ground to start the second half. A powerful rushing attack, led by Pitsenberger, drove the Bulldogs 53 yards in six plays. Pitsenberger finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge, his second touchdown of the day, making the score 28-9 with 3:08 left in the third quarter.
Brown responded with its most impressive drive of the game. Murphy, who finished 26 of 42 for 366 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, led the Bears on a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive. It was capped by a 5-yard touchdown run from Matt Childs, bringing the score to 28-16 late in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs’ ground game continued to chew clock in the fourth quarter. A 40-yard run by Wilhelm Daal, who finished with 67 yards on eight carries, set up a 33-yard field goal from Noah Piper, pushing the lead back to 31-16.
Brown’s offense showed flashes, with Murphy connecting with Trevor Foley six times for 145 yards. The Bears threatened again, but Murphy was intercepted by Phoenix Grant at the Yale 41, halting one drive.
After the turnover, Yale added another Piper field goal, this time from 40 yards, to make it 34-16 with 7:38 remaining.
The Bears struck quickly on their next possession, with Murphy finding Ty Pezza for a 55-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 34-22. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Any hope of a late Brown comeback was extinguished when Murphy was intercepted for a second time, this time by Joshua Tarver, with 1:20 left, allowing Yale to run out the clock.
The Bulldogs’ offense was balanced and efficient. Reno completed 20 of 28 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns, with Nico Brown being his primary target, hauling in six catches for 103 yards and both scores.
The win keeps Yale in the hunt near the top of the Ivy League standings, while Brown continues to search for consistency in a season of narrow defeats. The final score of 34-22 went under the betting over/under line of 49.5, despite the game simulator from Interstat having projected a closer 25-20 Yale victory.
Yale travels to face Princeton next Saturday, while Brown will be on the road at Columbia.
