East Tennessee State rolls past Samford for road victory

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame projections, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers delivered a commanding 38-14 victory over the Samford Bulldogs on Saturday at Seibert Stadium, fueled by a 21-point first-quarter explosion and a dominant rushing performance from Devontae Houston.

The Buccaneers, who entered the contest as slight favorites according to analytics but were projected to lose by the Interstat game simulator, improved to 5-5 on the season. Samford’s difficult year continued, falling to 1-9.

East Tennessee State wasted no time establishing control, scoring touchdowns on three of their first four possessions. The onslaught began just 80 seconds into the game when Houston, a running back from Roanoke, Alabama, burst through the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run.

The Buccaneers’ offense then unveiled a trick play that extended their lead. On their next drive, wide receiver Ephraim Floyd of Vero Beach, Florida, took a lateral and launched a 70-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Xavier Gaillardetz, a receiver from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Quarterback Jacolby Criswell, a Morrilton, Arkansas native, capped the first-quarter scoring barrage with a 26-yard touchdown strike to Karim Page of Dalton, Georgia, giving the Buccaneers a 21-0 lead before the game was eight minutes old.

Samford, showing brief signs of life, responded with a 13-play, 83-yard drive late in the opening quarter. Quarterback Quincy Crittendon of Decatur, Alabama, engineered the series, which he finished with a 20-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Evans of Mobile, Alabama, cutting the deficit to 21-7.

The second quarter saw the offenses stall, with the only points coming from a 46-yard field goal by East Tennessee State kicker Ewan Johnson of Knoxville, Tennessee, sending the Buccaneers into halftime with a 24-7 advantage.

Any hope of a Samford comeback was extinguished early in the third quarter. Criswell led a methodical drive, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Browder of Kingsport, Tennessee. On the ensuing Buccaneers possession, Houston put the game completely out of reach, breaking free for a 40-yard touchdown run, his second of the day, to push the lead to 38-7.

Houston was the engine of the East Tennessee State offense, amassing 151 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Criswell efficiently managed the game, completing 19 of 30 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 31 yards.

Gaillardetz was the primary receiving threat, hauling in three passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Jeremiah Harrison of Charlotte, North Carolina, added four receptions for 95 yards.

Samford’s offense struggled to find consistency against a stout Buccaneers defense. The Bulldogs used two quarterbacks, with Brady Stober of Hickory, North Carolina, and Crittendon combining to complete 21 of 38 passes for 256 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Crittendon also led the team in rushing with 30 yards.

The Bulldogs’ second touchdown came late in the fourth quarter against the Buccaneers’ reserves, with Stober connecting with Calvin Jones of Forest City, North Carolina, on a 25-yard pass.

Safety William Wells of West Palm Beach, Florida, secured the lone turnover of the game for East Tennessee State with an interception.

The loss extends a trying season for Samford, which has now lost nine consecutive games since a season-opening win. East Tennessee State, meanwhile, evened its record and will look to build momentum as it heads into its final two games of the season.

East Tennessee State travels to face Western Carolina next Saturday, while Samford hits the road to take on Austin Peay.
