Alberson Leads Chattanooga to High-Scoring Victory Over Furman
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections and unfolded as a wild offensive showcase, the Chattanooga Mocs erupted for 45 points to defeat the Furman Paladins 45-28 in a key Southern Conference matchup on Saturday at Finley Stadium.
The victory, fueled by a spectacular dual-threat performance from quarterback Battle Alberson, elevated both teams to .500 on the season, with each now holding a record of five wins and five losses. The combined score of 73 points dramatically surpassed the over/under line of 54.5, while Chattanooga covered the spread after being installed as a 5.5-point favorite.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with Furman controlling the first quarter. The Paladins engineered a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 9-yard touchdown run from Ben Croasdale to take a 7-0 lead with 2:20 remaining in the opening period. The Mocs’ offense, meanwhile, was stymied on their first possession, punting after a three-and-out.
The second quarter, however, marked a stunning and decisive shift in momentum. Chattanooga’s offense exploded for 21 points, completely flipping the game on its head. The Mocs tied the game at 7-7 just over a minute into the quarter when Alberson connected with tight end Landon Strickland on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
Furman responded with a 13-play, 88-yard march of their own, reclaiming the lead at 14-7 on a 3-yard touchdown plunge by CJ Nettles with 7:17 left in the half. The back-and-forth battle continued as Chattanooga answered immediately. Alberson found Josh Williams on a short pass that turned into a 66-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14-14.
The Paladins then executed a two-minute drill to perfection, with quarterback Trey Hedden hitting Kerry King on a 9-yard scoring pass to put Furman back in front 21-14 with just 1:21 left before halftime. Undeterred, Alberson and the Mocs mounted a lightning-fast response. He drove Chattanooga 75 yards in just five plays, culminating in a 47-yard touchdown strike to Markell Quick with 46 seconds on the clock, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 21-21.
The third quarter began with Furman threatening to retake control, but the game’s momentum swung violently and permanently in Chattanooga’s favor on a single play. On the Paladins’ opening drive of the half, Hedden’s pass was intercepted by Chattanooga’s Ky Tayo, who rumbled 51 yards for a defensive touchdown. The pick-six gave the Mocs their first lead of the day at 28-21.
After the teams traded punts, Chattanooga extended its lead with a 31-yard field goal from Jude Kelley, making it 31-21. Furman, however, showed resilience. Hedden connected with Evan James on a deep 43-yard touchdown pass to pull the Paladins back within a field goal at 31-28 late in the third quarter.
Any hope of a Furman comeback was extinguished in the fourth quarter as the Chattanooga defense stiffened and the ground game took over. The Mocs put the game away with two more touchdowns. Journey Wyche powered in from a yard out to cap a long drive, and Alberson put the final exclamation point on his day with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Wyche with 2:55 remaining, sealing the 45-28 victory.
Alberson was the undisputed star for Chattanooga. The quarterback from Gulf Breeze, Florida, was lethally efficient, completing 15 of 22 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He was equally devastating on the ground, adding 85 rushing yards on seven carries. His favorite target was Josh Williams, who hauled in six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown.
For Furman, Trey Hedden of Tampa, Florida, put up strong numbers in a losing effort, completing 19 of 27 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns. However, his two interceptions, one returned for a score, proved costly. Evan James was his primary weapon, catching five passes for 146 yards and a spectacular touchdown.
The Chattanooga ground game was a workhorse, with Ryan Ingram carrying the ball 22 times for 94 yards and Justus Durant adding 65 yards on 16 attempts. The Mocs’ defense, led by Amanuel Dickson and Kaelin Drakeford, who each recorded an interception, clamped down when it mattered most in the second half.
Both teams will look to secure a winning season in their next contests. Chattanooga travels to face Mercer next Saturday, while Furman returns home to host the Virginia Military Institute.
