McNeese State at Texas A&M-Commerce

(Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the McNeese State Cowboys capitalized on a stunning opening kickoff return and a dominant ground attack to secure a 35-20 road victory over the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The contest began with one of the most explosive plays imaginable. Just 15 seconds into the game, McNeese State’s Allijah Harrison fielded the opening kickoff and raced 100 yards for a touchdown, immediately silencing the home crowd and giving the Cowboys a lead they would not relinquish.

McNeese State’s offense quickly found its rhythm, supplementing the special teams fireworks with a methodical and powerful running game. The Cowboys extended their lead to 14-0 later in the first quarter when quarterback Jake Strong connected with receiver Kameran Senegal on a 39-yard touchdown pass.

Texas A&M-Commerce responded with a touchdown drive of its own to cut the deficit to 14-7, but the Cowboys answered early in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal from Ozlo Rigby. The Lions managed a field goal on their next possession, making the score 17-10.

Just before halftime, McNeese State’s defense delivered a critical blow. Defensive back Phillip Bradford intercepted a pass from Lions quarterback Ron Peace and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown, sending the Cowboys into the locker room with a commanding 24-10 advantage.

The Cowboys’ offensive identity was firmly established in the third quarter. Jake Strong, who proved to be a dual threat throughout the afternoon, broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run, pushing the McNeese State lead to 31-10. Strong finished the game with 136 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while also passing for 171 yards.

The Lions showed resilience in the fourth quarter, adding 10 points to their total. A 28-yard Rigby field goal was followed by a 22-yard touchdown pass from Eric Rodriguez to Jaden Proctor, bringing Texas A&M-Commerce within two scores at 31-20 with 6:43 remaining.

Any hope of a late comeback was extinguished by the Cowboys’ relentless rushing attack. On the ensuing drive, running back Coleby Hamm, who had a standout performance with 127 yards and two touchdowns, sealed the victory with a 29-yard scoring run with 2:46 left on the clock. Hamm’s touchdown provided the final margin of 35-20.

McNeese State’s defense, which recorded four interceptions in the game, stifled the Lions’ final efforts. Javon Davis secured the last of those interceptions with 1:27 remaining to effectively end the contest.

The victory improved McNeese State’s record to 4-6 on the season, while Texas A&M-Commerce fell to 2-8. The outcome was a surprise to statistical models, which had given the Lions a 70 percent probability to win and projected a much closer final score. The Cowboys’ ability to control the game on the ground and create explosive plays on special teams and defense proved to be the decisive factors.
