West Georgia at North Alabama
FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — Davin Wydner passed for two touchdowns and ran for another 40 yards, and Latrelle Murrell rushed for 128 yards and a score to lead West Georgia to a 24-17 road victory over North Alabama on Saturday at Braly Stadium.
The Wolves improved to 7-3 overall, while the Lions fell to 2-8.
West Georgia seized control with a dominant third quarter, outscoring North Alabama 14-0 to break a 17-17 halftime tie. The Wolves’ defense stifled the Lions after the break, forcing a series of punts and intercepting a pass to secure the win.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair. West Georgia struck first with a 36-yard field goal from Tommy Holden. North Alabama answered explosively on the next drive, as quarterback Destin Wade connected with Azariah Fletcher on a 75-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-3 lead.
The Wolves responded with a methodical drive capped by a 55-yard touchdown run from Murrell to go back in front 10-7. Wade then engineered another scoring drive for the Lions, finishing it himself with an 11-yard touchdown run to reclaim a 14-10 advantage.
A 43-yard field goal from Ian Vachon extended North Alabama’s lead to 17-10 in the second quarter. West Georgia tied the game just before halftime, with Wydner finding Bryce Dickerson for a 41-yard touchdown pass.
The Wolves took the lead for good on their first possession of the third quarter. Wydner orchestrated a drive that culminated in a 20-yard touchdown pass to Owen Dupree, putting West Georgia ahead 24-17.
From there, the Wolves’ defense took over. Jalen Burton intercepted a pass from North Alabama’s John Austin Wood in the fourth quarter to halt a potential game-tying drive. West Georgia’s offense then managed the clock effectively, with Murrell picking up key first downs to seal the victory.
Wydner, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound quarterback from Cocoa, Florida, was efficient, completing 26 of 34 passes for 274 yards. Dickerson was his top target, hauling in five passes for 81 yards and a score.
For North Alabama, Wade, a 6-3, 222-pound quarterback from Spring Hill, Tennessee, provided a spark, throwing for 137 yards and a touchdown on 5-of-7 passing and rushing for another score before exiting the game. Fletcher’s 75-yard touchdown catch was the Lions’ biggest play of the day. Punter Adam Watford was a bright spot, averaging 49.1 yards on nine punts, including a long of 62 yards.
The win keeps West Georgia in the hunt for a winning season as it prepares to host Utah Tech next Saturday. North Alabama will look to snap its skid on the road at Tarleton State.
