West Georgia Holds Off North Alabama for Road Win

FLORENCE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by explosive plays and a dominant ground attack, the West Georgia Wolves grinded out a 24-17 victory over the North Alabama Lions on a cool Saturday evening at Braly Stadium.

The win, secured by a stout defensive stand in the final minutes, improved West Georgia’s record to 7-3, while North Alabama fell to 2-8 on the season. The final score defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had forecast a higher-scoring affair with West Georgia favored to win.

The contest began at a frantic pace, with both teams finding the end zone twice in a wild first quarter. West Georgia struck first, marching down the field on their opening drive, which was capped by a 36-yard field goal from Tommy Holden.

North Alabama responded immediately and spectacularly. On their first offensive play from scrimmage following the kickoff, quarterback Destin Wade connected with receiver Azariah Fletcher on a deep pass that turned into a stunning 75-yard touchdown, giving the Lions an early 7-3 lead.

The Wolves answered with a methodical drive of their own, powered by running back Latrelle Murrell. The junior from Douglasville, Georgia, broke free for a 55-yard touchdown run to reclaim the lead for West Georgia. The back-and-forth opening period continued as Wade engineered another scoring drive for the Lions, capping it with an 11-yard touchdown scramble to put North Alabama back on top 14-10.

The second quarter saw the offenses settle, with the only points coming from North Alabama kicker Ian Vachon, who converted a 43-yard field goal to extend the Lions’ lead to 17-10 heading into halftime. West Georgia had a chance to tie the game just before the break, but Holden’s 51-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide left.

Emerging from the locker room, the Wolves seized control of the game in the third quarter. Quarterback Davin Wydner, who was efficient all afternoon, found tight end Bryce Dickerson on a 41-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 17.

Later in the quarter, Wydner engineered another scoring drive, this time connecting with receiver Owen Dupree on a 20-yard touchdown pass to give West Georgia a 24-17 lead, which they would not relinquish. Wydner, a 6-foot-5 junior from Cocoa, Florida, finished the game completing 26 of 34 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns, adding 40 yards on the ground.

The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle. The West Georgia defense stiffened, forcing a series of punts from North Alabama’s Adam Watford, who had a strong day with nine punts for 442 yards. The Lions, who turned to quarterback John Austin Wood after Wade’s early fireworks, were unable to sustain drives against a relentless Wolves pass rush.

North Alabama’s final opportunity began with just over two minutes remaining, but the drive stalled near midfield. West Georgia’s Jalen Burton sealed the victory with a key interception, his first of the season, allowing the Wolves to run out the clock.

The story of the game was the West Georgia rushing attack, led by Murrell. He gashed the Lions’ defense for 128 yards on 16 carries, including his long first-quarter touchdown. His consistent production kept the chains moving and allowed West Georgia to control the tempo in the second half.

For North Alabama, Wade provided the early spark, accounting for two touchdowns, but the offense struggled to find consistency after his departure. Running back Jayvian Allen was a workhorse, carrying the ball 16 times for 56 yards in the losing effort.

West Georgia will look to build on this road victory when they return home to face Utah Tech next Saturday. North Alabama hits the road to take on Tarleton State, also next Saturday.
