Austin Peay Rallies to Edge Central Arkansas in High-Scoring Affair

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a wild shootout defined by explosive plays and a dramatic second-half comeback, Austin Peay outlasted Central Arkansas 41 to 38 on Saturday at Fortera Stadium, securing bowl eligibility for the Governors in a nonconference matchup.

The game was a tale of two halves, with Central Arkansas dominating early before Austin Peay quarterback Chris Parson engineered a stunning rally, culminating in the game-winning touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

The Bears from Central Arkansas came out roaring, scoring on their first offensive play from scrimmage. Quarterback Austin Myers connected with receiver Malachi Henry on a 50-yard touchdown strike just over two minutes into the game, setting the tone for a dominant first quarter. Central Arkansas extended its lead to 14 points later in the period when running back Cam Young plunged in from 2 yards out.

Trailing 14 to 3 after one quarter, the Governors seized control in the second. The 24-point outburst was fueled by a versatile offensive attack and a key defensive turnover. The comeback began with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Parson to Nate Garnett Jr. The Governors’ defense then forced a fumble, which was recovered by Davion Hood, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Kaden Williams just three plays later to pull Austin Peay within three points.

After a Carson Smith field goal tied the game at 17, the Governors took their first lead just before halftime. Parson capped a methodical 85-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown scramble with 23 seconds left in the half, sending Austin Peay into the locker room with a 27 to 17 advantage.

Undeterred, Central Arkansas stormed out of the break to reclaim the lead. The Bears put up 17 points in the third quarter, starting with a Caleb Jones field goal. On the ensuing Austin Peay possession, a fumble by Parson was recovered by Central Arkansas linebacker Daylon Land, leading to a 43-yard touchdown pass from Myers to Tyrell Pollard. The Bears’ workhorse, running back Landen Chambers, then capped a 67-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, giving Central Arkansas a 34 to 27 lead heading into the final period.

Chambers was a force for the Bears, amassing 155 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries, while also catching three passes for 20 yards. Myers finished with three touchdown passes.

The fourth quarter belonged to Parson and the Governors. The Brentwood, Tennessee, native orchestrated two decisive scoring drives to secure the victory. He first tied the game at 34 with a 38-yard touchdown pass to Shemar Kirk, who finished with a game-high 144 receiving yards on nine catches.

After Central Arkansas answered with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Myers to Ty Durham to go up 38 to 34, Parson delivered the final blow. He led the Governors on a 68-yard drive, which he finished himself with a 19-yard touchdown run, his second rushing score of the day, to put Austin Peay ahead for good at 41 to 38 with 7:25 remaining.

Parson’s stat line was monumental, completing 23 of 32 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 73 yards and two more scores on 19 carries.

Central Arkansas had two final possessions to tie or win the game but was unable to sustain a drive. The Bears turned the ball over on downs with 1:54 remaining, and Austin Peay was able to run out the clock.

The victory improves Austin Peay’s record to 6 wins and 4 losses on the season, making them eligible for a postseason bowl game. Central Arkansas falls to 3 wins and 7 losses. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a Central Arkansas victory by a score of 42 to 37, while its ELO system gave Austin Peay a 75 percent probability to win.

Austin Peay’s special teams also played a crucial role, with punter Logan Leftrick averaging 39 yards on five punts and return man Javious Bond providing strong field position throughout, amassing 136 yards on six kickoff returns.

The Governors will look to build on the momentum next Saturday when they host Samford. Central Arkansas will travel to face Southern Utah on the same day.
