Sacramento State at Portland State

HILLSBORO, Ore. (Interstat) — Rodney Hammond Jr. rushed for 191 yards and two touchdowns as Sacramento State dominated Portland State 52-24 on Saturday at Hillsboro Stadium, defying pregame projections in a lopsided Big Sky Conference victory.

The Hornets, who were 20.5-point underdogs according to Interstat, improved to 6-4 overall. The Vikings fell to 1-9.

Sacramento State’s offense was relentless from the start, scoring on its first possession with a 25-yard touchdown run by Damian Henderson II. The Hornets built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, methodically extending their advantage while the defense stifled Portland State’s attack for much of the game.

Hammond was the engine of the Hornets’ offense, averaging over 11 yards per carry. His explosive plays included an 87-yard run in the third quarter that set up a short Jaquail Smith touchdown, and a 41-yard scoring run later in the same period. He added a final 19-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the game.

Quarterback Cardell Williams provided an efficient passing game for Sacramento State, completing 8 of 11 attempts for 188 yards and two touchdowns. His primary target was Ernest Campbell, who caught four passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. Williams also connected with Campbell on a 65-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.

The Hornets’ defense played a pivotal role, intercepting Portland State quarterbacks twice. Jason Oliver and Koa Akui each came down with an interception, with Oliver’s pick setting up an early Sacramento State scoring opportunity.

Portland State, which had been projected to win 43-42 by Interstat’s game simulator, struggled to find consistency on offense until the second quarter. The Vikings got on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run by Delon Thompson, who finished with 80 yards on 22 carries.

The Vikings added a touchdown just before halftime on a 15-yard pass from Tyrese Smith to Charlie White, making the score 21-14 at the break.

Smith, one of three quarterbacks to see action for Portland State, completed 8 of 11 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 37 yards and another score. His 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter was Portland State’s final touchdown. Terence Loville was a bright spot for the Vikings’ receiving corps, catching five passes for 106 yards.

Sacramento State pulled away in the second half, outscoring Portland State 31-10. After Hammond’s long touchdown run, the Hornets added a 35-yard field goal from Grant Meadors and a final touchdown from Sam Adams II in the fourth quarter.

The total points scored, 77, went well under the over/under line of 59.5.

Sacramento State next hosts Idaho on Nov. 15, while Portland State will be at home against Montana on the same date.
