Northern Arizona Routs Northern Colorado in Lopsided Victory
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency, the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks scored early and often, overwhelming the Northern Colorado Bears 49 to 10 in a Big Sky Conference matchup on Saturday at the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.
The Lumberjacks, now 6-4 overall, left little doubt about the outcome, building a 28-point halftime lead and cruising to a victory that saw them amass over 500 yards of total offense. The Bears fell to 3-7 on the season, unable to find consistent offensive traction against a stifling Northern Arizona defense.
Northern Arizona quarterback Ty Pennington was the catalyst for the offensive explosion, delivering a near-perfect performance. The Sand Springs, Oklahoma, native completed 19 of 22 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for another score. His precision passing set the tone, as the Lumberjacks scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters before adding a final touchdown in the fourth.
The Lumberjacks’ ground game was equally potent, featuring a committee of backs who found the end zone repeatedly. Seth Cromwell of Littleton, Colorado, led the charge with 50 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Darvon Hubbard, Ryan Fontaine and Quran Gossett each added a rushing touchdown, showcasing the depth of the Northern Arizona backfield.
The game began with Northern Arizona establishing immediate dominance. Pennington engineered a methodical opening drive, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jayson Raines to put the Lumberjacks on the board. After forcing a quick punt, the Lumberjacks struck again, with Hubbard plunging into the end zone from 4 yards out to cap another sustained drive, making the score 14 to 0 late in the first quarter.
Northern Colorado showed a brief spark in the second quarter. After a promising drive stalled deep in Northern Arizona territory, kicker Jacob Willig connected on a 32-yard field goal to put the Bears on the board. The Bears’ defense then forced a rare Lumberjack punt, but the offense could not capitalize, turning the ball over on downs.
Pennington and the Lumberjack offense promptly marched down the field, with Gossett scoring on a 7-yard run to extend the lead to 21 to 3.
Just before halftime, Northern Colorado put together its most impressive sequence. A drive fueled by the running of Brandon Johnson and Mathias Price was finished by Johnson, who scored on a 3-yard run with 23 seconds remaining. The touchdown and subsequent extra point cut the deficit to 21 to 10 and offered the Bears a glimmer of hope.
That hope was extinguished in stunning fashion on the ensuing kickoff. Northern Arizona’s dynamic playmaker Kolbe Katsis fielded the kick at his own goal line and raced 100 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the half. The devastating special teams score sent the Lumberjacks into the locker room with a 28 to 10 lead and all the momentum.
Any notion of a Bears comeback was squelched immediately in the third quarter. Northern Arizona received the second-half kickoff and needed just three plays to find the end zone again, with Cromwell scoring from 2 yards out to push the lead to 35 to 10.
The Lumberjack defense, which intercepted Northern Colorado quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. once and consistently pressured him, continued to stifle the Bears’ attack. Gibson finished 17 of 28 for 151 yards and was eventually relieved by Peter Costelli in the second half. Costelli went 3 of 5 for 29 yards and added 19 yards on the ground, but also threw a fourth-quarter interception to Northern Arizona defensive back Quentin Moten.
Northern Arizona’s final score came early in the fourth quarter when Fontaine broke free for a 7-yard touchdown run, setting the final margin at 49 to 10.
The Lumberjacks’ receiving corps was led by Isaiah Eastman, who hauled in six catches for 84 yards. Katsis was a weapon all over the field, adding 100 return yards to his 36 receiving and 51 rushing yards.
For Northern Colorado, Brayden Munroe was a bright spot with four catches for 64 yards. Johnson led the rushing attack with 36 yards and the team’s lone touchdown.
The result defied the pregame spread, which had Northern Colorado as a 13.5-point underdog, but fell short of the total points projected by the Interstat game simulator. The combined score of 59 points went under the over/under line of 57.5.
Northern Colorado will look to regroup next Saturday when it travels to face Eastern Washington. Northern Arizona returns to the Walkup Skydome to host Cal Poly.
