Eastern Michigan edges Bowling Green for 27‑21 home victory
YPSILANTI, Mich. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant ground attack and a late defensive stand, the Eastern Michigan Eagles outlasted the Bowling Green Falcons 27 to 21 on a crisp Saturday afternoon at Rynearson Stadium.
The victory, sealed by a 44-yard field goal from kicker Rudy Kessinger with just 57 seconds remaining, elevated both teams to identical 3-7 records on the season, a mark of resilience in a hard-fought Mid-American Conference contest that defied pregame projections which had favored Bowling Green.
Eastern Michigan’s offense flowed through the relentless legs of running back Dontae McMillan. The Seattle native was the workhorse for the Eagles, grinding out 100 yards on 19 carries and breaking the game open with a critical 33-yard burst in the fourth quarter that set up his own 8-yard touchdown run. That score gave Eastern Michigan a 24 to 17 lead with 10:18 left in the game and shifted the momentum firmly to the home side.
Quarterback Noah Kim, from Centreville, Virginia, managed the game effectively for Eastern Michigan. He completed 22 of 39 passes for 210 yards and connected with Nick Devereaux on a 12-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter. Kim also added 28 rushing yards on five carries, extending several drives with his mobility. Devereaux was his primary downfield threat, hauling in four catches for 79 yards.
Bowling Green’s offense was methodical, built around its own rushing leader, A. Dendy, who found the end zone twice in the first half. His second touchdown, a 16-yard scamper with three minutes remaining in the second quarter, gave the Falcons a 14 to 10 lead heading into halftime.
Falcons quarterback Hunter Najm of Aliso Viejo, California, was efficient, completing 11 of 15 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. His 2-yard touchdown pass to Jyrin Johnson with 4:36 left in the game capped a 13-play, 70-yard drive and tied the score at 24, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
The Eagles’ final drive was a masterclass in clock management and composure. After the Falcons tied the game, Eastern Michigan took over at its own 25-yard line with 4:30 on the clock. McMillan and Kim methodically moved the ball into Bowling Green territory, with a key 28-yard completion from Kim to Devereaux placing the Eagles in field goal range. After draining the clock and forcing Bowling Green to burn its remaining timeouts, Kessinger trotted onto the field and calmly drilled the game-winning kick.
While the offenses had their moments, the Eagles’ defense made pivotal plays throughout. The unit was led by linebacker Zach Mowchan of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, who racked up 10 tackles. The secondary, anchored by Bryce Llewellyn and Donovan Green with seven tackles each, came up with a crucial first-half interception from Barry Manning that halted a Bowling Green threat.
Bowling Green’s defensive effort was spearheaded by a trio of standout performers. Cornerback Kal-El Pascal and linebacker Gideon Lampron, both recording 12 tackles, were constantly around the ball, while linebacker David Afogho was a disruptive force, registering eight tackles and three quarterback hurries.
The game began as a back-and-forth affair. Eastern Michigan struck first with a 1-yard touchdown plunge from T. Dunlap midway through the opening quarter. Bowling Green answered immediately, with Dendy’s first touchdown, a 19-yard run, coming just over a minute later. Kessinger and Bowling Green’s J. Kleather then exchanged field goals and extra points in a game that saw six lead changes and ties.
The result was a reversal of recent fortunes for both programs. Eastern Michigan snapped a two-game losing streak, while Bowling Green saw its hopes for a late-season rally dampened with a second consecutive loss. The Eagles will look to build on this victory when they travel to face Ball State on Saturday, November 15. The Falcons return home to host Akron on Tuesday, November 18.
