East Carolina rolls past Charlotte behind Houser’s 4 touchdowns
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first-half offensive explosion and a game-changing defensive play, the East Carolina Pirates rolled to a 48-22 victory over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
The Pirates improved to 6-3 on the season, while the 49ers fell to 1-8.
East Carolina quarterback Katin Houser, a native of Anaheim, California, was the catalyst for the victory, accounting for four touchdowns. He completed 26 of 41 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding 26 yards and two more scores on the ground. His favorite targets were Anthony Smith, who hauled in eight catches for 69 yards and a touchdown, and Yannick Smith, who caught six passes for 59 yards and a score.
Running back London Montgomery provided a powerful complement in the backfield, rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries.
The Pirates set the tone immediately, marching 65 yards on the game’s opening drive, capped by a 7-yard Montgomery touchdown run. After forcing a quick Charlotte punt, the Pirates’ offense went back to work. Houser engineered another methodical drive, finishing it with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Smith to extend the lead to 14-0.
Charlotte’s offense, led by quarterback Grayson Loftis of Gaffney, South Carolina, struggled to find its footing against a swarming Pirates defense. The 49ers’ fortunes worsened late in the first quarter when Loftis, under pressure, threw an interception that East Carolina defensive back TyMir Brown returned 45 yards for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 21-0 as the first quarter ended.
The second quarter saw both offenses come alive. East Carolina struck first, with Houser plunging into the end zone from one yard out to complete a 69-yard drive and make it 28-0.
Charlotte finally responded. Loftis, who finished 20-of-31 for 279 yards and three touchdowns, found his rhythm, connecting with Jack Nicholas on a 46-yard deep pass for a touchdown to put the 49ers on the board.
The Pirates answered right back, however. Houser led another long drive, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Yannick Smith with 2:24 remaining in the half to restore the four-touchdown lead at 35-7.
Showing resilience, Charlotte’s offense mounted a two-minute drill before halftime. Loftis drove the 49ers 75 yards in just 47 seconds, finishing the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Shadrick Brown to cut the deficit to 35-14 at the intermission.
Any hope of a Charlotte comeback was stifled in the third quarter. After the teams traded field goals and touchdowns, the Pirates held a 45-16 lead. Charlotte managed to pull closer with a successful two-point conversion after Loftis’ 43-yard touchdown pass to Nicholas, making the score 45-22, but that was as close as they would get.
East Carolina’s defense, which recorded multiple sacks and consistent pressure throughout the game, sealed the victory. The unit was led by a collective effort, with linebackers Dameon Wilson and Jackson Barker, and defensive linemen Zion Wilson and Chance Graves all making significant plays in the backfield.
The Pirates’ offense effectively managed the clock in the fourth quarter, adding only a 50-yard field goal from Nick Mazzie to provide the final margin. The 49ers’ offense, which showed flashes of potency in the second and third quarters, was unable to sustain drives late, hampered by sacks and turnovers.
The final score of 70 combined points went under the pregame over/under line of 56.5. The result also defied the betting spread, as Charlotte, a 29.5-point underdog, managed to cover despite the lopsided defeat. The outcome was largely in line with projections from Interstat, which gave East Carolina a 97.1 percent probability to win and projected a final score of 42-28.
East Carolina looks to continue its winning ways next Saturday when it hosts Memphis. Charlotte returns home to face Texas-San Antonio next Saturday as it continues to search for its second win of the season.
