Southern Mississippi at Arkansas State
JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — A surging Southern Mississippi team looks to continue its climb when it visits an Arkansas State squad riding its own wave of momentum in a key Sun Belt Conference matchup on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles (6-2) have won four straight, including a 49-21 rout of Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 25 where quarterback Braylon Braxton accounted for four touchdowns. Southern Miss has averaged over 38 points per game during its winning streak.
They will be tested by a Red Wolves (5-4) team that has found its footing, winning three of its last four contests. Arkansas State is coming off a 23-10 road victory at Troy, powered by quarterback Jaylen Raynor’s 247-yard, two-touchdown performance.
Despite the Golden Eagles’ superior record, Arkansas State has been installed as a 4.5-point favorite at Centennial Bank Stadium. The game is projected to be a close one, with Interstat’s simulator forecasting a 30-29 win for the Red Wolves. The over/under is set at 55.5.
Southern Miss will rely on its balanced offensive attack, featuring Braxton and running backs Robert Briggs and Matt Jones. Arkansas State will counter with Raynor and a defense that has allowed an average of just 18 points over its last three games.
The contest could be pivotal for both teams’ postseason aspirations, with Southern Miss aiming for a seventh win and Arkansas State looking to become bowl-eligible with its sixth victory.
