Southern Mississippi holds off Arkansas State rally for 27‑21 road win
JONESBORO, Ark. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and a relentless aerial attack, the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles weathered a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Arkansas State Red Wolves to secure a 27-21 victory on Saturday at Centennial Bank Stadium.
The Golden Eagles, improving to 7-2 overall, built a commanding 17-point lead through three quarters only to see the Red Wolves storm back with two touchdowns in the final period. Southern Mississippi’s defense ultimately sealed the win with a last-second interception in the end zone, halting Arkansas State’s final desperate drive.
Southern Mississippi set the tone early, capitalizing on an immediate Arkansas State miscue. On the Red Wolves’ first offensive play, quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed a short pass to Chauncy Cobb, who fumbled after a hit from Garrick Ponder, with Ponder recovering the loose ball at the Arkansas State 25-yard line. The Golden Eagles’ offense could not find the end zone but converted the turnover into points with a 28-yard field goal from Creighton Wilbanks just over two minutes into the game.
Arkansas State answered with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive. Raynor orchestrated the series efficiently, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Kenyon Clay. The extra point from Clune Van Andel tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
The Golden Eagles reclaimed the lead on their next possession. After a change at quarterback, Landry Lyddy entered the game and engineered a scoring drive, finishing it himself with a 7-yard touchdown run to put Southern Mississippi ahead 14-7.
The game’s most explosive play came early in the second quarter. Lyddy connected with receiver Elijah Metcalf on a deep post route, and Metcalf did the rest, sprinting for a 76-yard touchdown that extended the Golden Eagles’ lead to 21-7.
From there, the contest evolved into a defensive struggle, with both secondaries making critical plays. Arkansas State’s defense, led by linebacker Kyle Taylor’s 11 tackles and a sack from Simeon Mitchell, managed to pressure the Southern Mississippi quarterbacks. However, the Golden Eagles’ defensive backfield was even more impactful. Josh Moten was a particular menace, hauling in three interceptions, while Ian Foster added another.
Despite moving the ball consistently, Raynor and the Red Wolves’ offense were repeatedly turned away by these costly turnovers in Southern Mississippi territory. The Golden Eagles added a 37-yard Wilbanks field goal in the third quarter to push their advantage to 24-7, seemingly putting the game out of reach.
The fourth quarter, however, belonged to Arkansas State. A shift in strategy saw backup quarterback Josh Flowers take over for a series, and the change provided a spark. Flowers capped a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyler Little, cutting the deficit to 24-14.
Southern Mississippi responded immediately, marching down the field to reclaim a two-score cushion. Quarterback Braylon Braxton, who shared duties with Lyddy throughout the game, found tight end Kyirin Heath for a 15-yard touchdown, making it 31-14 with just over nine minutes remaining.
Undeterred, the Red Wolves mounted another long drive, this one orchestrated by the returning Raynor. He methodically moved the offense 84 yards in 12 plays, finally hitting Jaylen Bonelli with a 3-yard touchdown pass to bring Arkansas State within a single score at 31-21.
After forcing a Southern Mississippi punt, the Red Wolves got the ball back with just over a minute left, needing to go 75 yards with no timeouts. Raynor nearly engineered a miracle, completing several passes to move Arkansas State to the Southern Mississippi 13-yard line with four seconds remaining. On the game’s final play, Raynor’s pass into the end zone was intercepted by Southern Mississippi’s A. Foster, sealing the victory for the Golden Eagles.
Statistically, Raynor had a prolific day for the Red Wolves, completing 37 of 48 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns, but his four interceptions proved decisive. Corey Rucker was his primary target, hauling in seven receptions for 123 yards.
For Southern Mississippi, the two-quarterback system proved effective. Braxton finished 20 of 29 for 228 yards and a touchdown, while Lyddy was 4 of 6 for 128 yards and a touchdown through the air, adding another on the ground. Metcalf’s five catches for 143 yards and a touchdown provided the deep threat, and running back Jeffery Pittman ground out 75 yards on 18 carries to balance the offense.
Defensively, Southern Mississippi was anchored by Chris Jones and Michael Montgomery, each recording 13 tackles. For Arkansas State, Taylor’s 11 tackles led all defenders.
The loss drops Arkansas State to a .500 record at 5-5. The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a narrow Arkansas State victory, and the Red Wolves had been installed as 4.5-point favorites.
Southern Mississippi will look to continue its winning ways when it hosts Texas State next Saturday. Arkansas State, now 5-5, has a extended break before its next contest, a Thursday afternoon matchup at home against Louisiana on November 20.
