Nevada at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah (Interstat) — Bryson Barnes threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns and the Utah State Aggies erupted for 41 first-half points to cruise past the Nevada Wolf Pack 51-14 in a Mountain West Conference matchup on Saturday at Maverik Stadium.

The Aggies, now 5-4 overall, seized control from the opening kickoff, scoring on their first four possessions and forcing two first-half turnovers that led directly to touchdowns. The Wolf Pack fell to 1-8 with the lopsided defeat.

Utah State’s offense was nearly unstoppable in the first half, scoring 24 points in the opening quarter and adding 17 more in the second. The onslaught began immediately as Barnes connected with Brady Boyd on a 53-yard touchdown pass just 1:41 into the game. After a Tanner Rinker field goal, the Aggie defense delivered a decisive blow when safety Brevin Hamblin intercepted a Nevada pass and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 24-14 late in the first quarter.

Barnes, a Milford, Utah native, was efficient throughout, completing 20 of 27 passes. He added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Garcia in the second quarter and capped the first-half scoring with a 21-yard strike to Boyd just before halftime. Boyd finished with five receptions for 117 yards and two scores.

Nevada’s offense, which entered the game as a 9.5-point underdog, struggled to find consistency against an aggressive Utah State defense. The Wolf Pack’s two scores came in the second half, both on touchdown passes from Chubba Purdy. Purdy found running back Cross Ramseur for a 41-yard score in the third quarter and hit tight end Jaden Carpenter on a 34-yard play in the fourth.

Purdy, from Queen Creek, Arizona, was a dual threat for Nevada, rushing for 45 yards and catching a pass while also throwing for 80 yards and two touchdowns. His efforts, however, were not enough to keep pace with the Aggies’ explosive attack.

The Utah State defense was led by Hamblin, who had eight tackles, a sack, and the pivotal interception return for a touchdown. Linebacker Nakian Jackson recorded a game-high 12 tackles for a Nevada defense that was on the field for much of the contest.

The Aggies’ 51 points far surpassed the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 40-35 Utah State victory. The combined score of 65 points went under the betting over/under line of 51.5.

Utah State will look to build on the dominant performance when they travel to face UNLV next Saturday. Nevada returns home to host San Jose State, also on Saturday.
