Utah State rolls past Nevada behind Barnes’ 3 touchdowns

LOGAN, Utah (Interstat) — In a game that was effectively decided in the first quarter, the Utah State Aggies delivered a commanding and comprehensive victory over the Nevada Wolf Pack, winning 51 to 14 on Saturday at a chilly Maverik Stadium.

The Aggies, now 5-4, exploded for 24 points in the opening period and never looked back, amassing 41 points by halftime and showcasing a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. The Wolf Pack, falling to 1-8, struggled to find any offensive consistency until the game was well out of reach, scoring their only points in the second half.

Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes, a Milford, Utah native, was the catalyst for the offensive onslaught. He orchestrated the Aggies’ high-tempo attack with precision, completing 20 of 27 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns, while adding 40 yards on nine carries. His favorite target was Brady Boyd, who hauled in five catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns.

The tone was set immediately. After forcing a Nevada punt on the opening drive, Barnes needed just three plays to find Boyd for a 53-yard touchdown strike, cutting through the Wolf Pack secondary to tie the game. The Aggies’ defense then forced a quick three-and-out, and the offense went right back to work.

A sustained drive culminated in a 3-yard touchdown run by M. Davis, giving Utah State a lead it would not relinquish. The Aggies’ defense continued to apply pressure, and with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter, safety Brevin Hamblin from Syracuse, Utah, read a pass from Nevada’s C. Jones perfectly, intercepting the ball at the Nevada 38 and returning it for a touchdown. A late field goal by Tanner Rinker from 32 yards capped the 24-point first-quarter outburst.

The second quarter was more of the same. Rinker connected on a 44-yard field goal, and after another Nevada interception, this one by Mataira Brown, Barnes engineered another scoring drive. He capped it with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Garcia, who also contributed 51 receiving yards on three catches. Just before the half, Davis punched in his second 1-yard touchdown run to send the Aggies into the locker room with a 41-point lead.

Nevada’s offense, which cycled through multiple quarterbacks, found a brief spark in the third quarter. Chubba Purdy, a quarterback from Queen Creek, Arizona, showcased his versatility. He connected with C. Ramseur on a 41-yard touchdown pass, one of his two passing touchdowns on the day. Purdy finished with 80 yards through the air on just 3-of-7 passing and was Nevada’s leading rusher with 45 yards on 10 carries.

The Wolf Pack added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter when Purdy found J. Carpenter for a 34-yard score, but the outcome was long since decided. Utah State closed the scoring with a 21-yard Rinker field goal in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, the Aggies were swarming, recording multiple sacks and interceptions. Hamblin’s pick-six was the defining play, but the unit as a whole stifled Nevada’s attack for the majority of the contest. For Nevada, linebacker Nakian Jackson was a bright spot in a difficult day, recording a game-high 12 tackles.

The victory moves Utah State above .500 as they enter the final stretch of their season, while Nevada’s struggles continue, having lost eight of their first nine games. The Aggies will look to build on this momentum next week when they travel to face UNLV. Nevada returns home to host San Jose State.

According to Interstat, the final score went under the projected over/under line of 51.5, despite the Aggies’ offensive explosion. The Aggies also outperformed their pregame spread, having been installed as 9.5-point favorites.
