Florida International Routs Middle Tennessee in High-Scoring Affair
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of pregame projections, the Florida International Golden Panthers erupted for 56 points to overwhelm the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders 56 to 30 in a non-conference football game Saturday at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium.
The victory improved Florida International’s record to 4-5, while Middle Tennessee fell to a disappointing 1-8. The result defied the expectations of Interstat’s game simulator, which had projected a 42-30 win for Middle Tennessee, and its ELO system, which gave the Blue Raiders a 53 percent probability of victory. Despite being installed as a slight 1.5-point underdog, the Golden Panthers dominated the second half, and the combined 86 points sailed far over the over/under line of 51.5.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with the only score of the first quarter coming from Middle Tennessee. Quarterback Nicholas Vattiato engineered a methodical drive, culminating in a 48-yard touchdown pass to running back Jekail Middlebrook. Jacob Hathaway’s successful kick gave the Blue Raiders an early 7 to 0 lead.
The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to Florida International and quarterback Joe Pesansky. The Golden Panthers exploded for 21 points in the period, completely shifting the game’s momentum. Pesansky started the scoring barrage with a 6-yard touchdown run. He then connected with receiver JoJo Stone on a deep 49-yard scoring strike. The Florida International defense then forced a critical fumble on the ensuing kickoff, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Ke’Vonn Owens to extend the lead.
Middle Tennessee managed to respond just before halftime. Vattiato led a two-minute drill, finding AJ Jones for a 5-yard touchdown pass. After forcing a quick Florida International punt, the Blue Raiders drove into field goal range, allowing Hathaway to convert a 48-yard attempt as time expired, cutting the deficit to 21 to 17 at the intermission.
Any hope of a Blue Raider comeback was quickly extinguished in the third quarter. Florida International picked up where it left off, with Pesansky firing a 20-yard touchdown pass to Alex Perry, though a failed two-point conversion kept the score at 27 to 17. Middle Tennessee answered with a touchdown of its own, as Vattiato hit Myles Butler from 5 yards out, narrowing the gap to 27 to 24.
The Golden Panthers responded immediately. Pesansky orchestrated another efficient drive, capping it with a 30-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Payne, pushing the lead back to 10 points at 34 to 24 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Florida International put the game completely out of reach. They opened with a 33-yard field goal from Nate Grant. On Middle Tennessee’s next possession, Vattiato was intercepted by Florida International’s Brian Blades II, who returned it 19 yards to the Blue Raiders’ 18-yard line. On the very next play, Pesansky found Perry for an 18-yard touchdown, his fourth touchdown pass of the game.
After a failed two-point conversion, the Golden Panthers led 43 to 24. They were not done, as Owens broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run on their next possession, extending the lead to an insurmountable 49 to 24. Running back Anthony Carrie added a final exclamation point with a 29-yard touchdown run to make it 56 to 24.
Middle Tennessee backup quarterback Roman Gagliano connected with Cam’ron Lacy on a 60-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds remaining, but the two-point conversion failed, producing the final margin of 56 to 30.
Statistically, Joe Pesansky was the catalyst for Florida International, completing 17 of 28 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 12 yards and another score. Alex Perry was his primary target, hauling in five receptions for 71 yards and two touchdowns. The Golden Panthers’ defense was led by Shamir Sterlin, who recorded 10 tackles.
For Middle Tennessee, Nicholas Vattiato completed 26 of 37 passes for 242 yards and three touchdowns but threw a crucial interception. Roman Gagliano relieved him late, throwing for 89 yards and one touchdown. Cam’ron Lacy was a bright spot with five receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Anthony Bynum posted a team-high nine tackles.
Florida International will look to build on this victory when they host Liberty next Saturday. Middle Tennessee will try to regroup on the road against Western Kentucky, also next Saturday.
