Louisiana Tech at Delaware
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal fueled by a chaotic final minute, the Delaware Blue Hens snatched a 25-24 victory from the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs on a last-second field goal Saturday at Delaware Stadium.
The game, a defensive struggle for three quarters, erupted in a wild fourth-quarter shootout that saw three touchdowns and the game-winning kick in the final three minutes. The victory improved both teams to 5-4 on the season.
Delaware quarterback Nick Minicucci, a junior from Midland Park, New Jersey, willed his team to the win despite a challenging day. He completed 26 of 52 passes for 304 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw three interceptions and was consistently harassed by the Louisiana Tech defense. He added 55 yards on nine carries.
For most of the contest, the Blue Hens’ offense sputtered, managing only three Nate Reed field goals to trail 7-3 after the first quarter and 7-9 at halftime. They finally found the end zone late in the third quarter when Minicucci connected with Kyre Duplessis on a 14-yard pass. Duplessis finished with six catches for 78 yards, while Sean Wilson was the primary deep threat, hauling in five passes for 107 yards.
Louisiana Tech’s offense was a committee effort, utilizing three different quarterbacks. Evan Bullock of Anna, Texas, saw the most action, completing 11 of 15 passes for 95 yards, while Trey Kukuk of Mission Viejo, California, was efficient, completing all three of his attempts for 66 yards and adding 28 rushing yards. Blake Baker of Cypress, Texas, also took snaps.
The Bulldogs held a slim 7-3 lead after a 37-yard touchdown run by C. Thevenin late in the first quarter, and the game remained a low-scoring, field-position battle until the final frame.
The fourth quarter began with a Louisiana Tech field goal to extend its lead to 10-9. The Bulldogs then appeared to seize control when Thevenin broke free for his second touchdown, a 13-yard run with 3:09 remaining, pushing the lead to 17-9.
The ensuing sequence turned the game on its head. On Delaware’s next play from scrimmage, Minicucci’s pass was intercepted by Louisiana Tech defensive back Jacob Fields, who returned it 38 yards for a touchdown. The pick-six, Fields’ second interception of the game, seemingly put the game out of reach at 24-9 with just 2:23 left.
Undeterred, Minicucci led the Blue Hens on a desperate, rapid-fire drive, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Sessoms with 34 seconds left. Needing a two-point conversion to tie, Minicucci’s pass fell incomplete, leaving the score at 24-16.
Delaware’s only hope was a successful onside kick, which Reed executed perfectly, with the Blue Hens recovering at the Louisiana Tech 40. Minicucci then engineered a frantic drive, moving the ball into field goal range. With six seconds left, Reed trotted onto the field and calmly drilled a 51-yard field goal as time expired to complete the improbable comeback.
Defensively, the game was defined by turnovers and tackles. Fields led Louisiana Tech with eight tackles, an interception, and the crucial touchdown. For Delaware, linebacker Gavin Moul of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was everywhere, recording a game-high 11 tackles.
The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Delaware a 76.9 percent probability to win, though the final score of 46 combined points fell well under the over/under line of 56.5.
