Colorado at West Virginia

STAR CITY, W.Va. (Interstat) — Scotty Fox Jr. rushed for 58 yards and a touchdown and the West Virginia defense recorded eight sacks to propel the Mountaineers to a 29-22 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Milan Puskar Stadium.

The game was a defensive struggle defined by pressure in the backfield and timely plays. West Virginia’s defense consistently harassed Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis, with Reid Carrico and Ben Bogle each recording two sacks. The Mountaineers’ persistent pass rush was the defining characteristic of the contest, stifling the Buffaloes’ offensive rhythm for long stretches.

West Virginia built an early lead it would not relinquish. After a blocked punt by Israel Boyce resulted in a safety in the first quarter, C.J. Jones Jr. capped a 13-play, 88-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Mountaineers a 9-0 lead after one quarter.

Colorado responded in the second quarter, cutting into the deficit with a 23-yard field goal from Alejandro Mata. The Buffaloes’ defense then came up with a big play as Preston Hodge intercepted a Fox pass. The turnover led to a 9-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Joseph Williams, though a failed PAT kept the score at 16-9 in favor of West Virginia.

Fox answered just before halftime, engineering a quick drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ward. After forcing a Colorado punt, West Virginia drove into field goal range, and Kade Hensley nailed a 41-yard kick as time expired in the half to send the Mountaineers into the locker room with a 19-9 advantage.

The Buffaloes came out of the break with renewed energy. John Slaughter picked off a Fox pass, setting up Colorado in West Virginia territory. Two plays later, Lewis connected with Omar Miller for a 23-yard touchdown, pulling the Buffaloes within three points at 19-16.

West Virginia extended its lead on the ensuing drive with another Hensley field goal, this time from 37 yards, making the score 22-16 late in the third quarter. Colorado continued to fight, and a 35-yard Mata field goal early in the fourth quarter brought the Buffaloes to within 22-19.

The Mountaineers then delivered the decisive blow, embarking on a methodical, 15-play, 57-yard touchdown drive that consumed over eight minutes of clock. Jones Jr. powered in from 4 yards out for his second rushing touchdown of the game, giving West Virginia a 29-19 lead with 4:15 remaining.

Colorado managed a final scoring drive, culminating in a 38-yard Mata field goal with 1:16 left to make it 29-22. The Buffaloes’ ensuing onside kick attempt was recovered by West Virginia, which then ran out the clock to secure the victory.

Lewis, the Colorado quarterback from Carrollton, Georgia, finished 22 of 35 for 299 yards and two touchdowns but was under constant duress. Fox, from Mentor, Ohio, was an efficient 17 of 28 for 202 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for West Virginia, adding 58 crucial rushing yards on the ground.

Defensively, Jeremiah Brown led all players with 11 tackles for Colorado. For West Virginia, the linebacker duo of Ben Bogle and Fred Perry, along with cornerback Darrian Lewis, each recorded seven tackles in a swarming team effort.

The win improves West Virginia’s record to 4-6, while Colorado falls to 3-7. The Mountaineers travel to face Arizona State next Saturday, while the Buffaloes are idle before hosting Arizona State on Nov. 22.
