Iowa State at Texas Christian

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Iowa State Cyclones mounted a late comeback to stun the Texas Christian Horned Frogs 20-17 on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

The game, characterized by offensive miscues and key defensive stands, saw the Cyclones improve to 6-4 on the season, while the Horned Frogs fell to 6-3. The combined 37 points fell well below the over/under line of 57.5, and the result was a stark contrast to the Interstat game simulator, which had projected a 33-22 victory for Texas Christian.

Iowa State seized the early momentum, capitalizing on a Texas Christian turnover to take a first-quarter lead. Quarterback Rocco Becht connected with tight end Benjamin Brahmer on a 23-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Cyclones with a 6-0 advantage that held for the remainder of the opening period.

The Horned Frogs’ offense, led by quarterback Josh Hoover, struggled to find its rhythm against a stout Iowa State defense. Texas Christian managed only a 35-yard field goal from Nate McCashland in the second quarter, sending the teams into halftime with Iowa State leading 6-3.

Texas Christian emerged from the break with renewed purpose, engineering a sustained drive that culminated in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hoover to Jordan Dwyer. The score gave the Horned Frogs their first lead of the game at 10-6 late in the third quarter.

That lead expanded early in the fourth quarter when Trent Battle punched in a 2-yard touchdown run, capping another methodical TCU drive and seemingly putting the home team in control with a 17-6 advantage.

The Cyclones, however, responded with a determined 75-yard scoring drive of their own. The march was keyed by the powerful running of Carson Hansen and a critical 25-yard scramble by Becht. Hansen, who finished with 108 yards on 28 carries, eventually barreled into the end zone from a yard out. Another failed two-point conversion kept the score at 17-12 with just over eight minutes remaining.

The game’s decisive play came on the ensuing TCU possession. After the Horned Frog defense forced a punt, Iowa State’s Aiden Flora fielded the kick and raced 79 yards for a touchdown. A successful two-point pass from Becht to Hansen gave the Cyclones a 20-17 lead with 6:32 left on the clock.

Texas Christian had two final opportunities to tie or win the game. The first drive ended when Jeremy Payne fumbled after a 28-yard run, with Iowa State’s Drew Surges recovering at the Cyclones’ 12-yard line. After forcing an Iowa State punt, the Horned Frogs got the ball back at their own 16-yard line with 18 seconds remaining. Hoover’s final heave was incomplete as time expired, sealing the victory for the visitors.

Hoover finished with prolific numbers, completing 34 of 50 passes for 319 yards and a touchdown, but he also threw two costly interceptions. His top targets were Eric McAlister, who caught 11 passes for 107 yards, and Jordan Dwyer, who had 11 receptions for 108 yards and a score.

For Iowa State, Becht had a challenging day through the air, completing just 9 of 24 passes for 111 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Cyclone defense was the story, with linebacker Kooper Ebel recording a game-high 11 tackles and safety Bud Clark snagging two interceptions for TCU.

Iowa State will host Kansas on Nov. 22, while Texas Christian travels to face BYU on Nov. 15.
