Iowa State rallies to stun TCU with late touchdown

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a stunning defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Iowa State Cyclones mounted a late-game comeback to upset the Texas Christian Horned Frogs 20-17 on Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

The game, a stark contrast to the high-scoring affair predicted by Interstat’s game simulator, was defined by relentless defensive pressure and critical turnovers. Iowa State improved its season record to 6-4, while Texas Christian fell to 6-3.

The Cyclones struck first, capitalizing on an early Texas Christian mistake. Horned Frogs quarterback Josh Hoover, who finished the day 34 of 50 for 319 yards, was intercepted by Iowa State defensive back Tre Bell on the opening drive. The Cyclones efficiently moved down the field, and quarterback Rocco Becht connected with tight end Benjamin Brahmer on a 23-yard touchdown pass. A failed two-point conversion left the score at 6-0.

That lead held through a first half dominated by defenses. Texas Christian’s offense, while moving the ball between the 20-yard lines, repeatedly stalled. They managed only a 35-yard field goal from Nate McCashland in the second quarter. Just before halftime, Horned Frogs safety Bud Clark intercepted Becht, but the Iowa State defense held firm, forcing a missed 25-yard field goal attempt to maintain a 6-3 lead at the break.

Texas Christian emerged from halftime with renewed purpose, embarking on a marathon 16-play, 78-yard drive that consumed over half of the third quarter. The drive, fueled by the running of Jeremy Payne and the precise short passing of Hoover, culminated in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Hoover to Jordan Dwyer. The score gave the Horned Frogs their first lead of the game at 10-6.

The momentum seemed to be firmly with the home team when Clark secured his second interception of the game on the ensuing Cyclones possession. Texas Christian then engineered another long drive, this one bleeding from the third quarter into the fourth. It ended with Trent Battle plunging in from two yards out, extending the Horned Frogs’ lead to 17-6 with 13:30 remaining in the game.

Facing an 11-point deficit, the Iowa State offense, which had been stifled for three quarters, finally found its rhythm. The catalyst was a ground game led by running back Carson Hansen. The Cyclones marched 75 yards on 11 plays, with Hansen carrying the ball eight times for 40 yards on the drive, including a one-yard touchdown run. Another failed two-point conversion kept the score at 17-12, but the Cyclones had seized momentum.

The game’s defining play came minutes later. Following a three-and-out by the Texas Christian offense, Iowa State’s Aiden Flora fielded a punt at his own 21-yard line, found a seam and raced 79 yards for a touchdown. Becht then successfully ran in the two-point conversion, vaulting the Cyclones back into a 20-17 lead with 6:32 left on the clock.

Texas Christian had two final chances to tie or win the game. The first ended abruptly when Payne fumbled after a 28-yard run, with Iowa State’s Drew Surges recovering at the Cyclones’ 12-yard line. The Cyclones’ offense then expertly drained the clock, converting a critical third down on a Becht run and forcing Texas Christian to burn its remaining timeouts.

The Horned Frogs got the ball back with 18 seconds left, but their desperate, multi-lateral final play ended well short of midfield as time expired.

Statistically, the game was a tale of two offenses stifled by opposing defenses. Hansen was a workhorse for Iowa State, rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Becht struggled through the air, completing only 9 of 24 passes for 111 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, but his 25-yard run in the fourth quarter was a pivotal moment in the comeback.

For Texas Christian, Hoover’s 319 passing yards were offset by two costly interceptions. Dwyer was his primary target, hauling in 11 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Eric McAlister added 11 receptions for 107 yards. The Horned Frogs’ rushing attack was led by Payne, who gained 71 yards on just eight carries.

Defensively, Iowa State was led by linebacker Kooper Ebel, who recorded 11 tackles. The Cyclones’ secondary, featuring Bell and Surges, came up with key plays throughout the contest. For Texas Christian, linebacker Kaleb Elarms-Orr had a game-high 12 tackles, while Clark’s two interceptions highlighted a strong day for the Horned Frogs’ defensive backfield.

The victory marks a significant road win for Iowa State as it looks ahead to a home contest against Kansas on Nov. 22. Texas Christian, meanwhile, must regroup before hitting the road to face BYU on Nov. 15.
