Ohio State Routs Purdue Behind Explosive Second Quarter

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming offensive firepower, the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes remained undefeated Saturday by dismantling the Purdue Boilermakers 34-10 in a Big Ten Conference matchup before a crowd of 57,701 at Ross-Ade Stadium.

The game was effectively decided in a dominant second-quarter explosion, where the Buckeyes scored 24 unanswered points to turn a narrow 3-0 deficit into a commanding halftime lead. The victory pushes Ohio State’s record to a perfect 9-0 on the season, while Purdue’s struggles continued, dropping them to 2-8.

Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, a sophomore from Carlsbad, California, was the catalyst for the offensive onslaught. He picked apart the Purdue secondary with precision, completing 27 of 33 passes for 303 yards and one touchdown. His favorite target was Jeremiah Smith, who hauled in 10 catches for 137 yards and a spectacular 35-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter that stretched the Buckeyes’ lead.

The Buckeyes’ ground game was equally potent, led by running back Bo Jackson. The Cleveland native broke the game open early with a 70-yard run on Ohio State’s first offensive play from scrimmage, setting the tone for a day where he would accumulate 75 yards on 14 carries. Isaiah West added 60 yards on nine attempts, providing a steady complementary threat.

Despite the lopsided final score, Purdue opened the game with promise. The Boilermakers engineered a 15-play, 60-yard drive on the game’s opening possession, culminating in a 40-yard field goal from Spencer Porath to take a 3-0 lead. That early advantage, however, was short-lived.

Ohio State responded immediately, marching down the field as the first quarter ended. The drive concluded on the first play of the second quarter when tight end CJ Donaldson plunged into the end zone from one yard out to give the Buckeyes a lead they would not relinquish.

The floodgates opened from there. After a Purdue three-and-out, Sayin connected with Smith for the 35-yard score. Later in the quarter, following a Ryan Browne interception by Ohio State’s J. Mathews Jr., the Buckeyes capitalized again. Backup quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, a Pierre, South Dakota native, entered the game and capped a short drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.

Ohio State closed the half by adding a 49-yard field goal from J. Fielding as time expired, sending the teams to the locker room with the score 24-3.

The second half saw the Buckeyes maintain control, though the scoring slowed. After a third quarter that saw Sayin throw his only interception of the day to Purdue’s CJ Nunnally IV, Ohio State added a 45-yard Fielding field goal early in the fourth quarter. Donaldson later added his second touchdown of the game, another 1-yard run, to push the lead to 34-3.

Purdue managed to find the end zone against the Ohio State reserves in the final minutes. Backup quarterback Malachi Singleton, from Kennesaw, Georgia, engineered a late drive and found Jesse Watson on a 7-yard touchdown pass to provide the final margin.

Defensively, the Buckeyes stifled the Purdue offense for most of the contest. Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne of Clarkston, Michigan, was held to 76 yards passing on 10-of-19 attempts and threw one interception before being relieved. Running back Antonio Harris was a bright spot for the Boilermakers, grinding out 45 yards on 13 carries and catching three passes for 19 yards.

Purdue’s defense was led by a massive individual effort from linebacker Mani Powell, who registered 13 total tackles, including one sack. Safety Tahj Ra-El also reached double figures with 10 tackles. As a unit, however, they were unable to contain the multifaceted Ohio State attack.

The win sets up a colossal showdown for the Buckeyes next Saturday when they host UCLA. Purdue, meanwhile, will travel to face Washington. The result was largely in line with pregame projections, though the Buckeyes’ defensive performance held Purdue well below the simulated point total. Ohio State covered the large pregame spread as the road favorite.
