Rutgers Rallies Past Maryland Behind Kaliakmanis, Raymond
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — In a game that began with a stunning burst of speed, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights methodically dismantled the Maryland Terrapins with a dominant ground game and a cascade of second-quarter touchdowns, securing a 35-20 victory on Saturday at SHI Stadium.
The contest pivoted on a 21-point explosion by Rutgers in the second quarter, erasing an early Maryland lead and setting the stage for a decisive second half. The win elevated Rutgers to a .500 record of 5-5, while Maryland fell to 4-5.
Maryland’s opening play from scrimmage was a statement. After a touchback on the opening kickoff, quarterback Malik Washington took the first snap and exploded through the right side for a 73-yard touchdown run just 37 seconds into the game. The lightning-fast score gave the Terrapins an immediate 7-0 lead, a margin that held through the remainder of a defensively stout first quarter.
The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound junior from Antioch, Illinois, found his rhythm, orchestrating three scoring drives. He connected with receiver DT Sheffield on a 9-yard touchdown pass to put Rutgers on the board.
After Maryland answered with a 27-yard field goal from Sean O’Haire to extend their lead to 10-7, Kaliakmanis immediately struck back. He launched a 45-yard touchdown pass to Ian Strong, giving Rutgers its first lead of the day at 14-10.
Maryland responded with its own big-play offense. Running back Nolan Ray broke free for a 53-yard run, setting up a 21-yard touchdown pass from Washington to Kaleb Webb, pushing the Terrapins back in front, 17-14.
But with under two minutes remaining in the half, Kaliakmanis engineered a masterful drive. He methodically moved the Scarlet Knights down the field, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass to Strong with 34 seconds left, sending Rutgers into halftime with a 21-17 advantage. The half ended dramatically as Maryland’s Washington was intercepted by Rutgers safety Jett Elad, sealing the momentum shift.
Rutgers extended its lead on its second possession of the third quarter. Kaliakmanis capped a 75-yard drive with his fourth touchdown pass of the day, another 14-yard connection with Strong, making it 28-17. Kaliakmanis finished an efficient 13 of 20 for 229 yards and the four scores, adding 12 yards on the ground.
The Terrapins managed only a 44-yard O’Haire field goal in the fourth quarter to pull within eight points, but could get no closer. The Rutgers defense, led by Eric O’Neill’s 10 tackles and three quarterback hurries, consistently stifled Maryland’s passing attack. Washington was held to just 98 yards through the air on 15-of-28 passing, though he amassed 164 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Scarlet Knights sealed the victory with a punishing, clock-killing drive in the final quarter, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run from running back Antwan Raymond. The Montreal native was the workhorse for Rutgers, carrying the ball 41 times for a staggering 240 yards and the final touchdown, relentlessly wearing down the Maryland defense.
Maryland linebacker Daniel Wingate recorded a game-high 12 tackles in a losing effort, while Lavain Scruggs added 10 tackles and a first-quarter interception for the Terps.
The victory defied the pregame betting lines, which had installed Maryland as a 2.5-point favorite. The combined score of 55 points also went over the projected over/under line of 57.5. The result aligned more closely with analytics, as Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Rutgers win by a score of 28-24, and its ELO system gave the Scarlet Knights a 77.3 percent probability to win.
Rutgers now looks ahead to a formidable road test at Ohio State on Nov. 22. Maryland will attempt to get back to .500 when they travel to face Illinois on Nov. 15.
