Texas A&M Stays Unbeaten, Routs Missouri on the Road

BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the undefeated and unranked Texas A&M Aggies marched into a hostile environment and delivered a commanding 38-17 victory over the Missouri Tigers on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

The game, played before a crowd of 57,321, was projected to be a narrow win for Missouri, with Interstat’s game simulator forecasting a 27-26 Tigers victory and its ELO system giving Missouri a 60.6 percent chance to win. The Tigers entered as 6.5-point favorites. Instead, Texas A&M improved to 9-0 while Missouri fell to 6-3.

The Aggies’ offense, led by quarterback Marcel Reed, was efficient and explosive, while their defense completely stifled Missouri’s attack. The Tigers, who managed only 10 points until a late fourth-quarter touchdown, were held to just 77 passing yards by a relentless Aggies pass rush and secondary.

Texas A&M set the tone early with a methodical 13-play, 96-yard touchdown drive that consumed over six minutes of the first quarter. Reed capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Ashton Bethel-Roman, giving the Aggies a lead they would not relinquish.

The Aggies extended their lead to 14-0 just before halftime. After a crucial stop on defense forced a Missouri turnover on downs near midfield, Texas A&M engineered a short scoring drive. EJ Smith punched it in from one yard out with 20 seconds remaining in the half, capitalizing on strong field position and a struggling Missouri offense.

Any hope of a Missouri comeback was quickly extinguished in the third quarter. On Texas A&M’s second offensive play of the half, Reed connected with KC Concepcion on a short pass that the dynamic receiver turned into a 48-yard touchdown, blowing the game open at 21-0.

Missouri finally found the scoreboard on its ensuing possession, with running back Jordon Roberts finishing a drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 21-7. The Aggies responded immediately, driving down the field to set up a 32-yard field goal from Randy Bond to make it 24-7.

After a Missouri field goal early in the fourth quarter made it 24-10, the Aggies delivered the knockout blow. On the first play following the kickoff, running back Rueben Owens II took a handoff, found a seam and raced 57 yards for a touchdown, restoring a three-score lead at 31-10.

Missouri answered with a quick strike, as running back Amauri Hardy broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run to make it 31-17. But the Aggies sealed the game with another Owens touchdown, this time from one yard out, with 2:36 remaining to bring the score to its final margin of 38-17.

Reed, the Texas A&M quarterback from Nashville, Tennessee, was the catalyst for the offense, completing 20 of 29 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns while adding 29 yards on the ground. Owens was the workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, including the game-breaking 57-yard score. Concepcion was a primary weapon, hauling in four receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.

The Aggies’ defense was the story of the game, however. Linebacker Cashius Howell, a Kansas City, Missouri native, recorded five tackles, a sack and a quarterback hurry in a homecoming performance. Daymion Sanford also had five tackles, a sack and a hurry. The unit consistently pressured Missouri quarterback Matt Zollers, who finished a dismal 7 of 22 for 77 yards and was sacked multiple times.

Missouri’s defense was led by linebacker Triston Newson, who racked up 11 tackles, and defensive lineman Chris McClellan, who had seven. But the unit, despite several players recording tackles, could not consistently get the stops needed to mount a comeback against a disciplined Texas A&M attack.

The Aggies will look to continue their perfect season next Saturday when they host South Carolina. Missouri will try to rebound at home against Mississippi State.
