Georgia at Mississippi State
STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — Gunner Stockton passed for three touchdowns and ran for another, leading Georgia to a decisive 41-21 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium.
In a matchup of Bulldogs, Georgia used a dominant 21-point second quarter to pull away, improving its record to 8-1 overall. Mississippi State fell to 5-5.
Stockton, a quarterback from Tiger, Georgia, was efficient, completing 18 of 29 passes for 264 yards. He connected with Oscar Delp and Zach Branch for second-quarter touchdowns, the latter coming with just 11 seconds left in the half to give Georgia a commanding 24-7 lead at the break. Stockton also added 31 rushing yards on six carries.
The game began as a defensive struggle, with Georgia holding a narrow 3-0 lead for much of the first quarter after a 49-yard Peyton Woodring field goal. Mississippi State answered with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kamario Taylor to take a brief 7-3 lead.
Georgia responded immediately, reclaiming the lead for good on a 4-yard touchdown run by Cash Jones early in the second quarter. The floodgates opened from there. Stockton’s touchdown pass to Delp and his last-second connection with Branch before halftime effectively put the game out of reach.
Georgia’s offense continued its onslaught in the third quarter. Nate Frazier broke loose for a 59-yard touchdown run on the opening drive, and on the next possession, Stockton hit Nyland Green on a short pass that turned into a 64-yard score, extending the lead to 38-7.
Mississippi State showed resilience, with Taylor leading two scoring drives. He punched in a 1-yard run late in the third quarter and added another 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth to cut the deficit. Taylor finished with three rushing touchdowns, completing 6 of 10 passes for 87 yards and adding 53 yards on the ground.
Mississippi State utilized a two-quarterback system, with Blake Shapen of Shreveport, Louisiana, starting and completing 10 of 15 passes for 86 yards. The offense found some success through the air, with Brenen Thompson hauling in four passes for 92 yards, including a 57-yard reception that set up Taylor’s final score.
Defensively, Georgia was led by KJ Bolden, who recorded 10 tackles. Joenel Aguero added seven tackles, while Raylen Wilson had six tackles, including 1.5 sacks. For Mississippi State, Brylan Lanier posted a team-high seven tackles.
The victory keeps Georgia in contention for a Southeastern Conference title and a potential College Football Playoff berth as it heads into a pivotal home matchup against Texas next Saturday. Mississippi State, still seeking bowl eligibility, travels to face Missouri.
The final score defied pregame expectations, as Georgia easily covered the spread after entering the game as a 9.5-point underdog. The combined score of 62 points also went over the projected total of 56.5. A crowd of 53,017 attended the game.
