Georgia rolls past Mississippi State behind Stockton’s 3 touchdowns
STARKVILLE, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant second-quarter surge, the Georgia Bulldogs methodically dispatched the Mississippi State Bulldogs 41-21 on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 53,017 at Davis Wade Stadium.
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton orchestrated a near-flawless offensive performance, accounting for three touchdowns to lead his team to a decisive victory that was more comprehensive than the final score indicated. The win improves Georgia’s record to 8-1 on the season, while Mississippi State falls to an even 5-5.
The contest began as a defensive struggle. After forcing a three-and-out on Georgia’s opening possession, Mississippi State engineered a methodical 16-play, 75-yard drive that consumed over five minutes of clock. The drive was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kamario Taylor, giving the home team an early 7-0 lead.
Georgia responded by moving the ball but stalled in the red zone, settling for a 49-yard field goal from Peyton Woodring to trim the deficit to 7-3. The first quarter ended with Mississippi State maintaining its narrow advantage, but the momentum was poised for a seismic shift.
The second quarter belonged entirely to Georgia, as the visiting Bulldogs erupted for 21 points. The onslaught began early in the period when running back Chauncey Bowens plunged into the end zone from 4 yards out to complete a drive sparked by a 36-yard completion from Stockton to London Humphreys. The score gave Georgia its first lead of the afternoon at 10-7.
After a Mississippi State punt, Georgia embarked on another long, methodical drive. This 13-play, 90-yard march was finished by Stockton, who connected with tight end Oscar Delp on an 8-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 17-7.
Mississippi State’s offense, which showed promise on its first drive, struggled to maintain consistency. Quarterback Blake Shapen and the offense were unable to mount a sustained response, and a turnover on downs just before halftime gave Georgia a final opportunity with under 30 seconds remaining.
Stockton capitalized swiftly. He efficiently moved the offense downfield, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown strike to receiver Zy’Marion Branch with just 11 seconds left on the clock. The score sent Georgia into the intermission with a commanding 24-7 lead, having outgained Mississippi State 264 yards to 146 in the first half.
Any hopes of a Mississippi State comeback were quickly extinguished in the third quarter. On just the fifth play from scrimmage, Georgia running back Nate Frazier broke loose for a breathtaking 59-yard touchdown run, pushing the lead to 31-7.
After a Mississippi State punt, Georgia struck again with a lightning-fast, one-play scoring drive. Stockton found a wide-open Ny Carr on a short pass over the middle, and the receiver did the rest, outracing the defense for a 64-yard touchdown. In a span of less than three minutes, Georgia had extended its lead to 38-7.
Mississippi State showed brief signs of life late in the third quarter. The offense, now led more consistently by the dynamic Taylor, put together a 13-play, 75-yard drive. Taylor himself finished it with a 1-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 38-14.
Georgia added a 46-yard field goal from Woodring early in the fourth quarter to make it 41-14. Mississippi State managed one final scoring drive, with Taylor connecting with Brenen Thompson on a 57-yard pass before running it in from 2 yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the game, setting the final score at 41-21.
Statistically, the game was controlled by Georgia. Stockton finished an efficient 18 of 29 for 264 yards and three touchdowns through the air, adding 31 yards on the ground. Frazier was the workhorse in the backfield, rushing for 159 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries. Branch was Stockton’s favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 48 yards and a score.
For Mississippi State, the quarterback duo of Shapen and Taylor combined for 173 passing yards. Taylor was the primary offensive threat, rushing for 53 yards and three touchdowns while adding 87 yards through the air. Thompson led all receivers with 92 yards on four catches.
Defensively, Georgia was led by KJ Bolden with 10 tackles, while Joenel Aguero added seven. Raylen Wilson was disruptive in the backfield, recording 1.5 sacks. For Mississippi State, Brylan Lanier posted a game-high seven tackles.
The victory keeps Georgia in the thick of the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division race as they prepare to host Texas next Saturday. Mississippi State, meanwhile, will look to regroup and secure bowl eligibility when they travel to face Missouri. The result defied the pregame spread, which had installed Mississippi State as a 9.5-point favorite, and the combined score of 62 points went over the betting total of 56.5.
