Ole Miss Dominates The Citadel in Non-Conference Tune-Up
OXFORD, Miss. (Interstat) — In a game that went precisely as projected, the Ole Miss Rebels methodically dispatched the FCS-level Citadel Bulldogs 49-0 on Saturday before 67,326 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The contest was never in doubt, with the ninth-ranked Rebels scoring on their first three possessions and building a 35-0 halftime lead to cruise to their ninth victory of the season. The Bulldogs, from the Southern Conference, were overmatched from the outset, managing just 175 total yards and failing to penetrate the Ole Miss red zone.
Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was the catalyst for the offensive onslaught. The Grand Rapids, Michigan, native was nearly flawless, completing 29 of 33 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns before exiting the game. His favorite target was Harrison Wallace III, who caught eight passes for 87 yards.
The Rebels’ offense operated with ruthless efficiency from the opening kickoff. They needed just eight plays to cover 87 yards on the game’s first drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Kedrick Lacy. After forcing a Citadel punt, Ole Miss marched 81 yards in 11 plays, with Lacy plunging in from 15 yards out for his second score of the day.
The first-quarter barrage continued after a missed 46-yard field goal attempt by The Citadel’s Jake Weil. Chambliss needed only three plays to capitalize, connecting with Winston Watkins on an 11-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 21-0 with 23 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The second quarter followed a similar script. Chambliss engineered a 10-play, 68-yard drive, finishing it with a 22-yard touchdown strike to Cayden Lee. Just before halftime, Chambliss led the Rebels on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, culminating in Lacy’s third rushing touchdown of the half from 3 yards out.
With the game well in hand, Ole Miss turned to its reserves in the second half. Backup quarterback Austin Simmons of Miami saw extensive action, and the Rebels added a single score in each of the final two quarters. Chambliss found Caleb Odom for a 1-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and Damien Taylor powered in from a yard out in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.
The Ole Miss defense was suffocating, recording four sacks and limiting The Citadel to just 23 passing yards. The Bulldogs’ best drive of the day, a 14-play, 66-yard march in the third quarter, ended with a missed 32-yard field goal. Citadel linebacker Mikey Rosa provided one of the few bright spots for the visitors, intercepting a Simmons pass and recording six tackles.
With the victory, Ole Miss improves to 9-1 overall as it prepares for a crucial SEC West matchup against Florida next Saturday. The Citadel falls to 4-6 and will look to rebound at home against Wofford.
