Houston at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — In a wild Friday night affair defined by defensive touchdowns and a late stand, the Houston Cougars escaped FBC Mortgage Stadium with a 30-27 victory over the UCF Knights.
The game, played on Nov. 7, 2025, saw Houston improve to 8-2 on the season while UCF fell to 4-5, a result that defied pregame projections that favored the Knights.
The contest turned decisively in a chaotic second quarter that featured 38 combined points. After UCF took an early 3-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal from Noe Ruelas, the Knights surged ahead with a 1-yard touchdown run from Myles Montgomery.
Houston answered immediately. On the ensuing drive, quarterback Conner Weigman connected with receiver Amare Thomas on a 64-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. The Cougars’ defense then provided the next score, as linebacker Latreveon McCutchin intercepted UCF’s Tayven Jackson and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, giving Houston a 17-10 lead.
UCF responded with a 15-yard touchdown run from Jaden Nixon to knot the score again at 17-17. The momentum, however, swung violently back to the Knights just before halftime. Houston’s Weigman was intercepted by UCF defensive back Phillip Dunnam, who returned the pick 43 yards for a touchdown, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and putting UCF up 24-17.
Unfazed, Houston quarterback Conner Weigman engineered a precise two-minute drill, marching the Cougars down the field to set up a 40-yard field goal from Ethan Sanchez as time expired in the half, cutting the deficit to 24-20.
Houston reclaimed the lead on its first possession of the second half, capping a drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Weigman to running back Dean Connors, making it 27-24. UCF managed to tie the game at 27-27 late in the third quarter on a 54-yard field goal from Ruelas, but would not score again.
The fourth quarter became a defensive struggle and a showcase for Houston’s ground game. The Cougars chewed up clock with a methodical 20-play drive that consumed over 12 minutes, culminating in a 22-yard Sanchez field goal to take a 30-27 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
UCF’s final chance was handed to backup quarterback Davi Belfort, who used his legs to drive the Knights into Houston territory. But on a first down from the Houston 24-yard line, Belfort was sacked for a 7-yard loss. Two plays later, his pass was intercepted by Houston defensive back Kentrell Webb in the end zone to seal the victory for the Cougars.
Weigman was the engine for Houston, completing 20 of 31 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns while also leading the team in rushing with 82 yards on 22 carries. His primary target was Amare Thomas, who caught five passes for 103 yards and a score. The Cougar defense was anchored by McCutchin, whose interception return for a touchdown was a pivotal moment.
For UCF, Jackson struggled, completing 15 of 29 passes for 136 yards and two interceptions. Tight end Dylan Wade was a bright spot with six receptions for 80 yards. Defensively, Dunnam was a force with three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown, and linebacker Lewis Carter recorded a game-high 15 tackles.
The combined score of 57 points went over the pregame over/under line of 47.5. Houston will next host Texas Christian on Nov. 22, while UCF travels to face Texas Tech on Nov. 15.
