Wildcats edge Texans on last-second field goal
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Interstat) — In a wild finish that defied pregame projections and saw a stunning fourth-quarter rally fall just short, Abilene Christian edged Tarleton State 31-28 on a walk-off 47-yard field goal by Brandon Perez on Saturday at Wildcat Stadium.
The Wildcats, who had been installed as 16.5-point favorites, saw a 14-point fourth-quarter lead evaporate before Perez’s kick as time expired delivered a crucial victory, improving their record to 5-4. The loss was the first of the season for the Texans, who fell to 9-1 after a furious 18-point final period nearly secured an improbable comeback.
The game’s conclusion was a stark contrast to its beginning, as Abilene Christian dominated the early stages. The Wildcats struck first, capping their opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass from Stone Earle to Jed Castles. After forcing a Tarleton State punt, Abilene Christian needed just three plays to find the end zone again, with Rovaughn Banks Jr. breaking free for a 40-yard touchdown run to give the home team a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Tarleton State’s offense, which had sputtered early, finally found its rhythm in the second quarter. Quarterback Victor Gabalis engineered a 13-play, 87-yard drive, finishing it with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Kramer. The Texans added a 36-yard field goal from Brad Larson later in the quarter to cut the deficit to 14-10 at halftime. The half ended dramatically, however, as Gabalis was intercepted by Abilene Christian’s DeAngelo Ponder at the goal line on the final play of the second quarter.
Abilene Christian reasserted control coming out of the locker room. Banks Jr. plowed in for his second touchdown from 2 yards out, and Earle added a 9-yard scoring run of his own late in the third quarter, pushing the Wildcats’ lead to 28-10 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.
The fourth quarter belonged to the resilient Texans. Gabalis, who finished the day 25 of 46 for 361 yards and two touchdowns, connected with Cody Jackson on a 25-yard scoring strike. A successful two-point conversion pass brought Tarleton State within 28-18. After a defensive stop, Larson knocked through his second field goal, a 34-yarder, to make it a one-score game at 28-21.
Tarleton State’s defense forced another punt, setting the stage for a potential game-tying drive. The Texans marched down the field and, with 56 seconds remaining, backup quarterback Daniel Greek powered in for a 1-yard touchdown run. Larson’s extra point tied the game at 28, completing the 18-point fourth-quarter surge.
With the game seemingly headed for overtime, Abilene Christian had one final answer. Starting at their own 25-yard line with 50 seconds left, Earle quickly hit tight end Bryan Henry over the middle for a 38-yard gain to the Tarleton State 37. After a run and an incomplete pass, Earle scrambled for 3 yards to set up Perez for the game-winning 47-yard attempt. The kick was true, splitting the uprights as the clock hit zero and setting off a Wildcat celebration.
Abilene Christian’s offense was powered by a potent ground game. E.J. Wilson rushed for 105 yards on 10 carries, while Banks Jr. added 83 yards and two touchdowns on 10 attempts. Earle managed the game effectively, completing 16 of 25 passes for 202 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while also rushing for a score.
For Tarleton State, Gabalis spread the ball around to a talented receiving corps. Jackson hauled in seven catches for 134 yards and a touchdown, Trevon West added six receptions for 111 yards, and Kramer finished with eight catches for 92 yards and a score. James Paige provided a spark on the ground with 76 rushing yards on just seven carries.
The result was a stunning upset in terms of the point spread and a heartbreaker for a Tarleton State team that had shown remarkable fight. The Texans will look to rebound when they host North Alabama on Nov. 15. Abilene Christian, now above .500, will host Utah Tech on Nov. 8.
