Wickersham, Spiders Hold Off Fordham for Home Victory

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Richmond Spiders grinded out a 17-14 victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday at Robins Stadium, overcoming a sluggish offensive performance with key defensive stops.

The game, a far cry from the high-scoring affair forecasted by statistical models, was ultimately decided by Richmond’s ability to capitalize on a handful of crucial plays and a dominant ground attack in the final minutes to seal the win. The victory improved Richmond’s record to 5-4, while Fordham’s difficult season continued, dropping them to 1-8.

The contest began with a surprising burst of offensive efficiency. Richmond took the opening kickoff and engineered a meticulous 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kyle Wickersham to receiver Ja’Vion Griffin. The drive was sustained by Wickersham’s arm and the powerful running of Aziz Foster-Powell, who accounted for 22 yards on the ground during the series.

Fordham responded immediately, though its scoring drive was set up by a critical special teams blunder. After the Rams’ offense initially stalled, a muffed punt by Richmond’s Jayden Alsheskie was recovered by Fordham’s Chris Tuck II at the Spiders’ 4-yard line. Two plays later, Fordham quarterback Gunnar Smith connected with Jack Freeburg for a 4-yard touchdown pass, knotting the score at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.

The offensive fireworks quickly fizzled. Richmond managed to add a 36-yard field goal from Jayden Alsheskie early in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead, a margin that would hold until halftime. Both defenses tightened, with Fordham’s unit, led by an interception from Drew Minich, and Richmond’s pass rush, which recorded multiple sacks, stifling any sustained drives.

The Spiders extended their lead in the third quarter, capitalizing on a pivotal mistake by the Rams. Smith’s pass was intercepted by Richmond defensive back Lee Bruner IV, who returned it 25 yards to the Fordham 47. Wickersham then hit Isaiah Dawson on a deep 42-yard completion to set up his own 4-yard touchdown run, giving the Spiders a 17-7 advantage.

Fordham, demonstrating resilience, mounted a serious challenge in the fourth quarter. Smith engineered a 13-play, 70-yard drive, repeatedly using his legs to extend plays and convert key downs. The drive culminated in a 4-yard touchdown run by Jack Kaiser, pulling the Rams to within three points at 17-14 with 8:18 remaining.

The Rams’ defense forced a quick three-and-out, giving Smith and the offense one final chance to tie or win the game with just over six minutes left. The drive started promisingly but ultimately stalled near midfield. After a punt, Richmond’s offense took over with 5:09 on the clock and put the game away with a methodical, run-heavy possession.

Foster-Powell, who finished with 62 rushing yards on 15 carries, was the workhorse, carrying the ball six times for 18 yards on the final drive, forcing Fordham to burn all three of its timeouts. The Spiders managed to drain the clock down to just 55 seconds before punting the ball back to Fordham, pinning them deep in their own territory.

With no timeouts and 80 yards to go, Smith’s last-ditch effort ended abruptly when Bruner IV secured his second interception of the game, allowing Wickersham to take two kneel-downs and clinch the victory for Richmond.

Wickersham, the Spiders’ quarterback from Metairie, Louisiana, was the engine of the offense, completing 23 of 35 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 44 yards and another score on the ground. Dawson was his primary target, hauling in seven receptions for 76 yards.

For Fordham, Smith struggled with efficiency through the air, completing 19 of 36 attempts for just 91 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He was more effective as a runner, gaining 41 yards on 14 carries. The Rams’ offense was hampered by an inability to establish a consistent rushing attack outside of Smith’s scrambles, with running back Ricky Parks managing only 14 yards on 10 carries.

The loss extends Fordham’s losing streak to three games as they prepare to host Bucknell next Saturday. Richmond, now above .500, looks to build momentum when they travel to face Georgetown.
