San Diego State Rides Sutton, Defense to Win Over Wyoming
OKLAHOMA CITY (Interstat) — In a game dominated by defense and a relentless ground attack, the San Diego State Aztecs methodically dispatched the Wyoming Cowboys 24-7 on Saturday at Taft Stadium.
The Aztecs, improving their record to 7-1, leaned heavily on running back Lucky Sutton and a stifling defense that forced four Wyoming turnovers to overcome a slow start and pull away for a comfortable victory. The Cowboys, who struck first, saw their record fall to 4-5 as their offense sputtered after an impressive opening drive.
Wyoming came out aggressively, marching 75 yards on a 10-play, no-huddle drive to open the game. The drive was keyed by a 37-yard run by quarterback Landon Sims and capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Sims to fullback Sam Scott, giving the Cowboys a 7-0 lead with 10:29 remaining in the first quarter.
San Diego State’s offense initially struggled to find its footing, but the momentum shifted late in the first quarter. Wyoming quarterback Kaden Anderson, under pressure from Aztecs defensive lineman Ryan Henderson, threw an interception to Bryce Phillips, who returned it 28 yards to the Wyoming 24. On the very next play, Aztecs quarterback Jayden Denegal connected with Byron Cardwell Jr. on a 24-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7.
The second quarter belonged to the Aztecs as their defense continued to confound the Cowboys. A second Anderson interception, this one by Dwayne McDougle, set up a 34-yard field goal by Gabriel Plascencia, giving San Diego State its first lead at 10-7.
The Aztecs extended their lead just before halftime with a methodical 10-play, 79-yard drive. The series was finished by utility player Jordan Napier, who took a direct snap and ran 7 yards for a touchdown, sending San Diego State into the locker room with a 17-7 advantage.
The third quarter was a defensive stalemate, with both teams trading punts. San Diego State had an opportunity to add to its lead, but a 23-yard field goal attempt by Plascencia sailed wide left. Wyoming’s offense, meanwhile, could not sustain any drive, consistently stymied by the Aztecs’ front seven.
San Diego State put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. After a Wyoming drive ended in a missed 50-yard field goal attempt by Evan Sandvik, the Aztecs took over at their own 36. On the first play of the drive, Sutton broke through the line and raced 50 yards for a touchdown, his powerful run effectively sealing the 24-7 victory.
Sutton was the workhorse for the Aztecs, carrying the ball 28 times for 158 yards and the decisive touchdown. Denegal managed the game effectively, completing 11 of 22 passes for 194 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Donovan Brown was his top receiver, hauling in two passes for 51 yards.
The San Diego State defense was the story of the game, with linebacker Owen Chambliss leading the way with 13 tackles and an interception. The unit recorded two sacks and consistently harassed Wyoming’s quarterbacks, while the secondary’s four interceptions halted any potential comeback.
For Wyoming, the quarterback combination of Kaden Anderson and Landon Sims could not find consistency. Anderson completed 12 of 24 passes for 93 yards and threw three interceptions. Sims provided a spark with his legs, rushing for 52 yards on just four carries, but the Cowboys’ rushing attack otherwise managed only 60 yards. Linebacker Ethan Stuhlsatz was a bright spot on defense, recording a game-high 10 tackles.
The loss continues a up-and-down season for Wyoming, which now looks ahead to a road game at Fresno State on Nov. 15. San Diego State, firmly in the conference championship conversation, will travel to face Hawaii on Nov. 9. The final score of 24 fell well below the over/under line of 42.5, a testament to the defensive nature of the contest.
