UCF at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson accounted for three touchdowns and the Bears’ defense forced three turnovers in a dominant 30-3 victory over the UCF Knights on Saturday at McLane Stadium.
The Bears improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Knights fell to .500 at 4-4.
Robertson, a Lubbock native, was efficient and effective, completing 29 of 40 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 8 rushing yards on four carries. His favorite target was tight end Michael Trigg, who hauled in five receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown. Kole Wilson also caught a touchdown pass, finishing with five receptions for 56 yards.
Baylor’s offense set the tone early, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions. Robertson capped a 13-play, 80-yard opening drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Trigg. After forcing a UCF three-and-out, the Bears needed just eight plays to go 52 yards, with Robertson finding Josh Cameron for a 2-yard score to take a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter.
The Knights’ offense, led by quarterback Tayven Jackson, struggled to find any rhythm against a swarming Baylor defense. Jackson completed 18 of 33 passes for 151 yards and was intercepted twice. UCF’s lone points came on a 45-yard field goal by Nikolas Ruelas as time expired in the first half, cutting the deficit to 20-3.
Baylor’s defense was the story of the game, consistently stifling UCF drives. Safety Devyn Bobby led all players with eight tackles, while safety DJ Coleman had six tackles and a key fourth-quarter interception that he returned 26 yards to set up Baylor’s final touchdown. Safety Jacob Redding also secured an interception for the Bears.
The defensive front, led by Malachi Lawrence’s two sacks for UCF, applied pressure, but Baylor’s offensive line largely held firm, allowing Robertson time to operate.
Baylor added to its lead with two Connor Hawkins field goals in the second quarter, from 40 and 28 yards, and another from 41 yards in the third quarter to make the score 23-3.
The Bears put the game completely out of reach early in the fourth quarter when Robertson connected with Wilson on a 9-yard touchdown pass, concluding the scoring at 30-3.
UCF’s offense was led by running back Myles Montgomery, who rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries and caught two passes for 23 yards. Receiver Duane Thomas Jr. was a bright spot, catching eight passes for 77 yards. Linebacker Cole Kozlowski recorded a game-high 11 tackles in a losing effort for the Knights.
Baylor controlled the game throughout, outgaining UCF and dominating time of possession. The Bears’ win defied the pregame spread, which had UCF as a 3.5-point favorite, and the combined 33 points fell well under the over/under line of 59.5.
UCF looks to rebound next Friday when it hosts Houston. Baylor has a bye next week before hosting Utah on Nov. 15.
