Nelson’s 4 touchdowns power Monmouth past Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. (Interstat) — Rodney Nelson rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns, powering the Monmouth Hawks to a decisive 28-10 victory over the Hampton Pirates on Saturday afternoon at a sun-drenched Armstrong Stadium.

The win, Monmouth’s fourth straight, improved the Hawks to 5-1 across all competitions this season, solidifying their position as a formidable force in the conference. Hampton, meanwhile, saw its struggles continue, falling to 2-5.

From the opening drive, the game’s narrative was written by Nelson and the Monmouth offensive line. The Hawks established a punishing ground attack that the Pirates’ defense could not consistently contain. Monmouth set the tone early, marching down the field on its second possession. The drive was a masterclass in ball control, featuring eight runs by Nelson, who capped it with a 5-yard touchdown scamper with 5:16 remaining in the first quarter.

Hampton responded with its most promising drive of the first half. A 36-yard run by Donovan Shepard and a series of completions from quarterback Braden Davis moved the Pirates deep into Monmouth territory. The drive stalled at the 1-yard line, however, forcing Hampton to settle for a 19-yard field goal from hometown kicker Brett Starling, making the score 7-3.

The Hawks answered immediately, embarking on another methodical, run-heavy drive. Nelson was again the workhorse, breaking off a 29-yard run to set up his second touchdown of the day, another 5-yard run, to extend Monmouth’s lead to 14-3.

The second quarter was a defensive struggle, marked by missed opportunities for Hampton. The Pirates moved the ball into Monmouth territory multiple times but were undone by penalties and sacks. Just before halftime, Hampton had its best chance to close the gap, driving to the Monmouth 6-yard line. The drive imploded with a series of sacks and a holding penalty, pushing the Pirates out of field goal range and preserving Monmouth’s 14-3 lead at the break.

Hampton emerged from halftime with renewed vigor. Davis, who finished 21 of 33 for 242 yards, engineered an impressive 80-yard scoring drive. He connected with receiver Tae’Shaun Johnson on a 44-yard pass to the 1-yard line, and running back Gracen Goldsmith punched it in on the next play to cut the deficit to 14-10.

The momentum was short-lived. Monmouth’s defense stiffened, and the offense returned to its foundational strength: handing the ball to Nelson. The Hawks controlled the clock and field position throughout the third quarter, and early in the fourth, they delivered the knockout blow.

A sustained Monmouth drive culminated in Nelson’s third touchdown, a 1-yard plunge that pushed the lead to 21-10 with 9:36 remaining. The Hawks’ defense then sealed the victory when Israel Clark-White intercepted a Davis pass near midfield. Nelson put the final exclamation point on his dominant performance with his fourth touchdown of the day late in the fourth quarter to produce the final margin.

While Davis had a statistically solid day for Hampton, finding Johnson seven times for 104 yards, the Pirates’ offense was plagued by inconsistency and an inability to finish drives in the red zone. Monmouth’s offense, in contrast, was ruthlessly efficient on the ground, with quarterback Frankie Weaver of New Market, Maryland, managing the game effectively, completing 14 of 25 passes for 122 yards.

The victory keeps Monmouth on a hot streak as they look ahead to a road contest at Bryant next Saturday. Hampton will have a bye week to regroup before hosting Maine on Nov. 8. The final score defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had forecast a narrow 42-41 Monmouth win and whose ELO system gave the Hawks an 83.8 percent probability of victory. The reality on the field was a far more commanding performance by the visiting Hawks.
