Colgate at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of fortune, the Colgate Raiders scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to overcome a 14-point deficit and hand the Holy Cross Crusaders a heartbreaking 29-28 defeat on Saturday at Fitton Field.

The victory, sealed when Holy Cross turned the ball over on downs with five seconds remaining, improved Colgate’s record to 2-4, while the Crusaders remained winless at 0-6 in a season that has seen them lose four games by a single score.

The outcome defied nearly all pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a 28-21 Holy Cross victory, and its ELO system gave the Crusaders a 91.8 percent probability to win.

Colgate quarterback Jake Stearney, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior from Chicago, Illinois, engineered the comeback, finishing the game 23 of 40 for 216 yards and two touchdowns. His 4-yard rushing touchdown with 12:43 left in the game brought the Raiders within one score, and his 9-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Cassamajor with 2:35 remaining provided the winning points. A failed two-point conversion attempt kept the Holy Cross lead within a field goal, but the Raiders’ defense held firm.

The Crusaders had appeared to be in complete control after a dominant third quarter. After trailing 10-7 at halftime, Holy Cross exploded for 14 points in the period. Quarterback Braden Graham, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound freshman from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, connected with Lincoln Fisher on a 6-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing Colgate possession, a punt was blocked by Holy Cross’s Blake Youngblood and returned 47 yards for a touchdown by Max Mosey, giving the Crusaders a 28-14 lead.

Graham finished 15 of 24 for 127 yards and two touchdowns. His primary target was Fisher, who caught four passes for 37 yards and two touchdowns. The Crusaders’ ground game was led by Jayden Clerveaux, who rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries.

Colgate responded immediately after Mosey’s punt return touchdown. Stearney led a 79-yard drive, capping it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Reed Swanson. A failed extra point by Luke Vogeler left the Raiders trailing 28-20 heading into the final quarter.

The Raiders’ rushing attack provided a crucial balance to Stearney’s arm. Danny Shaban was a workhorse, grinding out 93 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. His 30-yard scamper in the fourth quarter set up the game-winning touchdown drive.

Holy Cross had a chance to reclaim the lead late in the fourth quarter, but a 45-yard field goal attempt by Luis Palenzuela sailed wide left with 9:03 remaining. The Crusaders’ final drive, which started at their own 35-yard line with 2:35 left, ended when Graham’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete near midfield, allowing Colgate to kneel out the clock.

The game began as a defensive struggle before Colgate struck first. The Raiders put together a methodical 15-play, 74-yard drive on their opening possession, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run by Shaban.

Holy Cross answered with a 75-yard drive of its own, finished by a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Dominic Campanile to tie the game at 7-7. The Crusaders took their first lead early in the second quarter when Graham found Fisher for an 11-yard touchdown, making it 14-7. Colgate’s Vogeler hit a 34-yard field goal just before halftime to cut the deficit to 14-10.

Colgate will look to build on the momentum of this comeback victory when it hosts Merrimack next Saturday. Holy Cross, still searching for its first win, will welcome Lafayette to Fitton Field.
