Tarleton State rolls past Eastern Kentucky to remain unbeaten

RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — In a commanding road performance, the undefeated Tarleton State Texans methodically dismantled the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 31-7 on Saturday at Roy Kidd Stadium, leaning on a dominant third quarter and a stifling defense to maintain their perfect season.

The Texans, now 7-0 overall, broke open a tight contest with 21 unanswered points in the third quarter, turning a 10-7 halftime lead into a lopsided victory. The Colonels fell to 3-3.

The game began as a defensive struggle. Tarleton State’s opening drive was the lone bright spot of the first quarter, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Daniel Greek. The 11-play, 52-yard march set the tone, but the Texans’ offense would sputter for much of the first half.

Eastern Kentucky responded in the second quarter, putting together its most impressive drive of the afternoon. A methodical series, aided by a key Tarleton State penalty for roughing the passer, was capped by a 2-yard Brayden Latham touchdown run with just seconds remaining in the half. The score cut the Texans’ lead to 10-7 and gave the home team momentum heading into the break.

That momentum was short-lived. Tarleton State’s defense emerged from the locker room with renewed vigor, and the offense rediscovered its rhythm.

The Texans took the second-half kickoff and promptly engineered a 7-play, 75-yard scoring drive. The series was highlighted by a 38-yard burst from running back Tre Page III and finished with a 1-yard plunge by James Paige, pushing the lead back to 10 points.

The floodgates then opened. On the ensuing possession, Eastern Kentucky quarterback Kam Montgomery fumbled a snap, which was recovered by Tarleton State’s Jadan Aubert at the Colonels’ 34-yard line. The Texans capitalized seven plays later when starting quarterback Victor Gabalis connected with T’iar Young on a 7-yard touchdown pass.

The Texans’ defense forced another quick punt, and the offense went back to work. A 10-play, 66-yard drive was capped by Greek’s second 1-yard touchdown run of the game, effectively putting the contest out of reach and sealing the 31-7 final.

Gabalis, the Texans’ primary quarterback, managed the game effectively, completing 18 of 27 passes for 207 yards and one touchdown. The Tarleton State ground game was the true engine of the offense, amassing significant yardage behind a committee approach. Page III led all rushers with 74 yards on 13 carries, while James Paige added 47 yards and a score. Greek contributed not only with his two short touchdown runs but also with a key 28-yard completion.

Eastern Kentucky’s offense never found consistency. Quarterback Myles Burkett led the Colonels with 113 passing yards and added 50 yards on the ground, but the unit was plagued by two critical interceptions. Kasyus Kurns and Hagan Stephenson each came down with picks for the Texans’ defense, with Stephenson’s 83-yard return on the game’s final play epitomizing the Colonels’ frustrating day.

The result defied several pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a high-scoring affair with Tarleton State winning 41-34, while the ELO system gave the Texans a 78.6 percent probability to win. Despite being installed as a 23.5-point underdog, Tarleton State easily covered the spread. The combined score of 38 points fell far below the over/under line of 60.5.

Tarleton State will look to continue its unbeaten streak on the road next Saturday against Abilene Christian. Eastern Kentucky, seeking to get back to .500, will travel to face Central Arkansas, also next Saturday.
