Ole Miss Holds Off Oklahoma Rally to Stay Undefeated

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — In a clash of unbeaten aspirations, the Ole Miss Rebels weathered a furious second-half rally from the Oklahoma Sooners to escape a sold-out Memorial Stadium with a 34-26 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Before an announced crowd of 83,468, the Rebels built a commanding 22-point lead, saw it nearly vanish in a chaotic third quarter, and then made the necessary plays in the final period to secure the win and remain perfect on the season. Ole Miss improved to 6-0, while Oklahoma suffered its first loss, falling to 5-1.

The game unfolded in starkly different halves. Ole Miss dominated the first 30 minutes, methodically moving the ball while its defense stymied the Oklahoma attack. Quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, a 6-foot-1, 176-pound sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the catalyst, orchestrating scoring drives on three of the Rebels’ first four possessions.

The opening quarter belonged to Ole Miss. They took the opening kickoff and marched 52 yards in eight plays, culminating in a 45-yard field goal from Lucas Carneiro. After Oklahoma answered with a 42-yard field goal from Tate Sandell, the Rebels responded immediately with a 75-yard touchdown drive. The key play was a 28-yard scoring burst up the middle by running back Kewan Lacy, giving Ole Miss a 10-3 lead.

The second quarter saw the Rebels extend their advantage through a combination of offensive execution and defensive opportunism. Following a 76-yard touchdown pass from Oklahoma’s John Mateer to Isaiah Sategna III that cut the lead to 10-10, the Ole Miss defense produced a critical safety. They stuffed Oklahoma running back Tory Blaylock in the end zone, pushing the lead to 12-10.

The Rebels capitalized on the ensuing free kick, driving for a 22-yard Carneiro field goal. Just before halftime, Ole Miss engineered a masterful 74-yard drive, chewing up over five minutes of clock, which was capped by Lacy’s second rushing touchdown, a 2-yard plunge that sent the visitors into the locker room with a 22-10 lead.

The momentum shifted violently in the third quarter. Oklahoma’s defense stiffened, forcing a trio of quick three-and-outs, while their offense suddenly found its rhythm. After a 29-yard Carneiro field goal extended the Ole Miss lead to 25-10, Oklahoma running back Xavier Robinson provided the spark the Sooners desperately needed. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Robinson broke through the line and raced 65 yards for a touchdown, electrifying the home crowd and cutting the deficit to 25-19.

The Sooner defense forced another punt, and the offense went right back to work. A 60-yard drive, keyed by a 16-yard scramble from Mateer and aided by an Ole Miss penalty, was finished by Robinson again, this time from 9 yards out. The touchdown and extra point gave Oklahoma its first lead of the game at 26-25, completing a stunning 16-point third-quarter outburst.

Facing adversity for the first time, Ole Miss responded like a championship contender. They opened the fourth quarter with a decisive 75-yard touchdown drive to reclaim the lead. Chambliss connected with Winston Watkins on a crucial 39-yard gain to get into the red zone, and three plays later, he found tight end Trace Bruckler for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The Rebels successfully converted a two-point attempt, pushing their lead to 33-26.

Oklahoma’s next drive stalled near midfield, and Ole Miss added an insurance score with a 37-yard Carneiro field goal with just over four minutes remaining, making it 36-26. The Sooners had one last chance, driving to the Ole Miss 45-yard line in the final minute, but the Rebel defense held firm, with Mateer’s final four pass attempts falling incomplete to seal the victory.

Chambliss finished with 314 yards passing and a touchdown through the air, adding 53 yards on the ground. His favorite target was Watkins, who hauled in four passes for 110 yards. Lacy was the workhorse in the backfield, carrying the ball 27 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

For Oklahoma, Mateer completed 17 of 31 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown. Robinson was the standout performer for the Sooners, rushing for 109 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. Sategna III was a deep threat, catching six passes for 131 yards and a score.

Defensively, Ole Miss was led by Princewill Umanmielen, who recorded 2.5 sacks and was a constant disruptive force in the Oklahoma backfield. Marvin Jones Jr. recorded a sack for the Sooners.

The win keeps Ole Miss in the heart of the conference and national championship conversation as they prepare to host South Carolina next Saturday. Oklahoma, meanwhile, must regroup for a tough road test at Tennessee. The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had favored Oklahoma by 5.5 points and projected a 33-20 Sooner victory, though their ELO system had given Ole Miss a 57.8 percent probability to win. The total points of 60 went over the betting line of 52.5.
