Texas A&M Routs LSU in Baton Rouge to Stay Undefeated

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Texas A&M Aggies delivered a dominant performance, dismantling the LSU Tigers 49-25 in front of a stunned crowd of 101,924 at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

The Aggies, entering as a 2.5-point underdog and given less than a 27 percent chance to win by some analytics systems, improved to 6-0 overall and solidified their status as a national contender. The Tigers, coming off a loss to Vanderbilt, fell to 5-1, their championship aspirations dealt a severe blow on their home field.

The game was a showcase for Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed, who authored a masterful dual-threat performance. The Nashville, Tennessee, native completed 12 of 21 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns while also terrorizing the LSU defense on the ground, rushing for 108 yards and another score on 13 carries.

Texas A&M set the tone immediately, marching 68 yards on their opening drive, capped by a 41-yard touchdown scramble from Reed. LSU responded with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard drive, with quarterback Garrett Nussmeier finding tight end Trey’Dez Green for a 5-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

The Aggies answered right back, with Reed connecting with receiver KC Concepcion on a 15-yard scoring strike to close the first quarter with a 14-7 lead. The second quarter belonged to LSU, but only in terms of momentum, not points. The Tigers’ defense forced a safety and then a critical interception by A.J. Haulcy in the end zone to halt a promising Texas A&M drive.

LSU running back Harlem Berry, who finished with 59 yards on nine carries, punched in a 7-yard touchdown run. The Tigers then drove deep into Aggie territory just before halftime, settling for a 30-yard Damian Ramos field goal to cut the deficit to 21-18 at the break.

Any hope for a second-half LSU resurgence was extinguished in a devastating third-quarter blitz by the Aggies. Texas A&M scored 21 unanswered points in the period, turning a tight contest into a rout.

Reed opened the second-half scoring with his second rushing touchdown, a 5-yarder. The knockout blow came just minutes later when Concepcion fielded a Grant Chadwick punt at his own 21-yard line, found a seam, and raced 79 yards for a spectacular touchdown. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native was a constant threat, finishing with 132 punt return yards to go with his 45 receiving yards and two total touchdowns.

Reed then put an exclamation point on the quarter, finding Jamarion Morrow for a 24-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 42-18.

The Aggies added a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 1-yard run by tight end Nate Boerkircher. LSU backup quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. of Bowie, Maryland, led a late scoring drive, connecting with Kyle Parker on a 12-yard touchdown pass with under a minute to play for the final margin.

While the Aggie offense was explosive, their defense was equally disruptive. They sacked LSU quarterbacks six times, with DJ Hicks, Cashius Howell, and T.J. Searcy all contributing to the pressure. The unit held the Tigers’ passing game in check for most of the night.

Nussmeier, the Lake Charles, Louisiana, native, completed 22 of 35 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions before being relieved. His top targets were Green, who had six catches for 54 yards and a score, and Aaron Anderson, who caught five passes for 59 yards. The LSU defense was led by safety A.J. Haulcy, who recorded 12 tackles and an interception.

Texas A&M will look to continue its perfect season when it travels to face Missouri on Nov. 8. LSU, seeking to rebound from its second straight loss, faces a daunting trip to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama the same day.
