Tarleton State Stays Unbeaten, Routs West Georgia
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive dominance, the unbeaten Tarleton State Texans dismantled the West Georgia Wolves 45-10 on Saturday night at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
The Texans, now 7-0, left little doubt about their status as a national force, overwhelming a West Georgia team that fell to 5-2. The game was a stark departure from the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 39-32 Tarleton State win, with the Texans’ defense stifling the Wolves’ attack from the opening drive.
Tarleton State set the tone early, marching 75 yards on a methodical 11-play opening drive that consumed over three and a half minutes. The drive was a showcase for quarterback James Paige, a 5-foot-10, 196-pound sophomore from Newnan, Georgia, who carried the ball six times on the possession, capping it with a 2-yard touchdown run. Paige finished the game as a dominant force on the ground, rushing 21 times for 106 yards and a touchdown.
West Georgia’s offense, led by quarterback Davin Wydner, struggled to find any rhythm. Wydner’s first pass of the ensuing drive was intercepted by defensive back Kasyus Kurns, setting a precedent for a long night for the Wolves. Wydner finished 11 of 23 for 118 yards and was sacked five times.
The Texans extended their lead in the second quarter. After a Wolves fumble gave Tarleton State a short field, quarterback Victor Gabalis connected with Cody Jackson on a 16-yard touchdown pass. Gabalis, a 6-3, 218-pound junior from Everett, Washington, later found Marquis Willis for a 26-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 21-0.
West Georgia’s offense sputtered, hampered by penalties and a relentless Texans pass rush. A blocked punt deep in their own territory further crippled the Wolves’ efforts. Just before halftime, Tarleton State added a 33-yard field goal from Brad Larson to take a commanding 24-0 lead into the break.
The Wolves finally got on the board in the third quarter with a 52-yard field goal from Simon Zeidan, capping a 15-play drive that stalled in the red zone. Any momentum was short-lived, as Tarleton State answered immediately. On their next possession, running back Tre Page III broke free for a 39-yard touchdown run, restoring the Texans’ four-score lead at 31-3.
West Georgia found the end zone early in the fourth quarter when Wydner hit running back Latrelle Murrell on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Murrell was a bright spot for the Wolves, rushing 14 times for 41 yards and adding three receptions for 26 yards and the score.
The Texans, however, responded with a devastating blow. On the very next play from scrimmage, Gabalis launched a 75-yard touchdown bomb to T’iar Young, extinguishing any hope of a West Georgia comeback. Gabalis finished an efficient 13 of 24 for 268 yards and three touchdowns.
Tarleton State sealed the victory with a final touchdown drive in the closing minutes, capped by a 7-yard scoring run from Braelon Bridges.
Defensively, the Texans were disruptive throughout, recording two interceptions and multiple sacks. The Wolves’ offense was held to just 118 passing yards and 147 total yards of offense.
The loss snaps a promising start to the season for West Georgia, which will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Central Arkansas. Tarleton State, firmly establishing itself as a national contender, will travel to face Eastern Kentucky next Saturday.
