Sacramento State Outlasts Northern Colorado in High-Scoring Shootout

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth affair defined by explosive plays and critical mistakes, the Sacramento State Hornets outlasted the Northern Colorado Bears 40-35 on Saturday at Hornet Stadium in a Big Sky Conference showdown.

The game, which saw the lead change hands multiple times in the second half, was ultimately decided by a dominant Sacramento State rushing attack and a game-sealing defensive stand in the final seconds. The victory pushed both teams to an even 3-3 record for the season.

Northern Colorado quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. put on a spectacular aerial display, completing 21 of 33 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. His primary target was Carver Cheeks, who had a monster performance with nine receptions for 223 yards and all three of Gibson’s touchdown throws. The Bears’ ground game was anchored by Mathias Price, who rushed for 102 yards on 16 carries.

Despite Gibson’s heroics, the Bears were undone by a quartet of interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, and an inability to contain Sacramento State’s multifaceted running game.

The Hornets’ offense churned out yards behind a trio of running backs. Rodney Hammond Jr. led the way with 134 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, while Jaquail Smith added 103 yards on 17 attempts. Sam Adams II contributed 60 yards and a touchdown on just six carries.

Sacramento State’s defense, while giving up significant yardage, made the plays that counted. The Hornets intercepted Gibson four times, with Koa Akui, Jason Oliver, Lono Chouteau, and Ricky Lee III each grabbing one. Lee’s interception was the most impactful, as he returned it 34 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Hornets a lead they would not relinquish.

The game began as a defensive struggle. Sacramento State opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal from Grant Meadors late in the first quarter.

The second quarter erupted into an offensive showcase. The Hornets extended their lead to 10-0 on a 46-yard touchdown run by Hammond. Northern Colorado responded immediately, with Gibson finding Cheeks on a 75-yard touchdown strike on the very next play from scrimmage.

After forcing a punt, the Bears drove down the field and took their first lead of the game on a 2-yard touchdown run by Brandon Johnson, making it 14-10. Sacramento State answered with a 25-yard touchdown pass from Cardell Williams to Bear Tenney to reclaim the lead at 17-14.

Just before halftime, Gibson engineered a masterful two-minute drill, capping it with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Cheeks with 24 seconds left, sending the Bears into the locker room with a 21-17 advantage.

Sacramento State reclaimed the momentum out of the break, marching down the field and retaking the lead on a 34-yard touchdown run by Adams. The back-and-forth continued as Northern Colorado answered with another 2-yard touchdown run from Johnson, pushing the Bears back in front 28-24.

The Hornets then closed the third quarter with a 28-yard Meadors field goal to trim the deficit to 28-27.

The turning point came just 13 seconds into the final period. On Northern Colorado’s first play of the quarter, Gibson’s pass was intercepted by Lee and returned 34 yards for a touchdown, swinging the lead back to Sacramento State at 34-28.

Undaunted, Gibson and Cheeks connected for a third time, this time on a 62-yard touchdown to put the Bears back on top 35-34.

Sacramento State then embarked on a methodical drive that resulted in a 34-yard Meadors field goal, giving the Hornets a 37-35 lead with 9:30 remaining. After another Gibson interception, the Hornets added insurance with a 42-yard field goal from Meadors, his fourth of the game, to extend the lead to 40-35 with just over two minutes left.

Northern Colorado had one final chance, driving from its own 25-yard line to the Sacramento State 3-yard line in the closing minute. However, the Hornets’ defense stiffened. After a run for no gain, Gibson’s final pass attempt into the end zone on the game’s last play fell incomplete, sealing the dramatic victory for Sacramento State.

The combined score of 75 points vastly exceeded the pregame over/under line of 53.5, defying the projections that had heavily favored the Hornets. The win sets up a crucial conference matchup for Sacramento State next Friday at home against Montana. Northern Colorado will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts UC Davis.
