Coastal Carolina upsets Appalachian State in high-scoring affair
BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a wild, high-scoring affair that defied pregame projections, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers rode a powerful and diverse rushing attack to a 45-37 upset victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday at a raucous Kidd Brewer Stadium.
The game, a critical Sun Belt Conference matchup, saw the Chanticleers improve to 3-3 on the season while handing the Mountaineers their second loss, dropping them to 4-2. The combined 82 points sailed far over the pregame over/under line of 48.5, and the result was a stunning reversal of fortune, as Appalachian State had been installed as a 10.5-point favorite and was given an 80.5 percent probability to win by statistical models.
The contest was an offensive showcase from the opening whistle, with both teams trading blows in a frantic first half. Appalachian State struck first, marching 75 yards on their opening drive. The series was capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback JJ Kohl to wide receiver Davion Dozier, giving the Mountaineers an early lead.
Coastal Carolina responded with a methodical drive of its own, culminating in a 43-yard field goal from kicker Kian Afrookhteh. The Mountaineers answered immediately, with running back Rashod Dubinion breaking free for a 12-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 14-3.
Undeterred, the Chanticleers unveiled a new weapon. Backup quarterback MJ Morris entered the game and immediately provided a spark, connecting with Malcolm Gillie on a 34-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to narrow the gap.
The second quarter continued the back-and-forth trend. Kohl engineered another impressive drive for Appalachian State, finding Jaden Barnes on a 6-yard scoring pass to push the lead back to 11 points. Coastal Carolina’s primary quarterback, Samari Collier, then took over, orchestrating a 75-yard drive that he finished himself with a 4-yard touchdown run.
The momentum seemed to swing decisively just before halftime. With seconds remaining in the half, Collier’s pass was intercepted by Appalachian State’s Elijah Mc-Cantos, who returned it to the Coastal Carolina 13-yard line. The Mountaineers capitalized on the short field with a 31-yard field goal from Dominic De Freitas as time expired, taking a 24-17 lead into the break.
Any sense of Appalachian State control evaporated in a disastrous start to the third quarter for Coastal Carolina. After a quick three-and-out, punter Emile Sebafundi booted a 52-yard kick, but Jaden Barnes fielded it, found a seam, and returned it 77 yards for a touchdown, stunning the home crowd and extending the Mountaineer lead to 31-17.
Facing a 14-point deficit, the Chanticleers’ offense found another gear. Collier led a swift 75-yard answering drive, mixing runs and passes before plunging in for a 6-yard touchdown run of his own. After Appalachian State added another De Freitas field goal, Collier went back to work. He found a streaking Jameson Tucker for a 37-yard touchdown pass, pulling Coastal Carolina to within three points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mountaineers managed one more field goal from De Freitas early in the final period to go up 37-31, but from that point on, the game belonged to Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers embarked on a marathon, clock-chewing drive that covered 75 yards and consumed nearly six minutes of game time. The drive was a testament to their ground game, with Collier and running back Dominic Knicely doing the bulk of the work. Knicely eventually powered in from one yard out to give Coastal Carolina its first lead of the game at 38-37.
Appalachian State’s ensuing possession ended abruptly when Kohl was sacked by Zeke Campbell and fumbled, with Coastal Carolina’s Noah Arinze recovering. The Chanticleers put the game away on the very next play, as Jevon Edwards broke through for an 8-yard touchdown run to seal the 45-37 victory.
Coastal Carolina’s offense was a two-headed monster at quarterback. Starter Samari Collier of Desoto, Texas, was dynamic, completing 12 of 19 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 74 yards and two more scores on 17 carries. MJ Morris of Carrollton, Georgia, provided a crucial change of pace, completing both of his pass attempts for 39 yards and a touchdown, and adding a 10-yard run.
For Appalachian State, quarterback JJ Kohl of Ankeny, Iowa, put up strong numbers, completing 27 of 41 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns, and adding 29 yards on the ground. However, he was sacked four times and lost a critical fumble late. His top targets were tight end Izayah Cummings, who had six catches for 60 yards, and Davion Dozier, who caught four passes for 70 yards and a score. Jaden Barnes contributed significantly as a returner, taking a punt back 77 yards for a touchdown.
Defensively, the game was defined by tackling volume. Coastal Carolina’s Ja’Marion Wayne led all players with 11 tackles, while teammates Luke Murphy and Xamarion Gordon each had eight. Appalachian State’s Colton Phares also recorded 11 tackles, and Zyeir Gamble was close behind with nine. Coastal Carolina’s Tray Brown registered a sack and a quarterback hurry in the winning effort.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Coastal Carolina, which was coming off a 2-3 start to the season. Appalachian State will look to rebound next week on the road against Old Dominion, while the Chanticleers have a bye week before hosting Marshall on October 30.
