Hawaii Topples Colorado State Behind Alejado’s 3 Touchdowns

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Interstat) — Micah Alejado threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, and the Hawaii Warriors methodically built a commanding lead before holding off a late Colorado State rally for a 31-19 victory on Saturday at Canvas Stadium.

The Warriors, improving to 5-2 overall, controlled the game for three quarters behind the efficient play of Alejado, a junior quarterback from Las Vegas. He completed 26 of 38 passes, connecting with Jackson Harris for two of his three scoring throws.

Hawaii set the tone on its opening drive, marching 75 yards in 11 plays. The possession was capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Alejado to Nick Cenacle, giving the Warriors a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Colorado State (2-4) found an immediate answer, but not from its offense. After a Hawaii punt late in the first quarter, Javion Kinnard fielded the ball at his own 9-yard line and weaved through the coverage for a 91-yard punt return touchdown, tying the game at 7.

The Warriors reclaimed the lead in spectacular fashion late in the second quarter. Following a Colorado State punt, Alejado found Harris on a deep route for a 75-yard touchdown strike, putting Hawaii ahead 14-7, a lead they would carry into halftime.

Hawaii extended its advantage on the first drive of the second half. Alejado engineered another lengthy drive, finishing it with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Harris, pushing the lead to 21-7. The Warriors added a 26-yard field goal from Kansei Matsuzawa later in the third quarter to take a 24-7 lead into the final period.

The Rams, who had struggled offensively for much of the game, mounted a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. Starting quarterback Jackson Brousseau led a 72-yard drive, culminating in a 7-yard touchdown pass to Armani Winfield. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score at 24-13.

After a quick Hawaii possession, Colorado State drove again, with utility player Tahj Bullock plunging in for a 3-yard rushing touchdown. Another failed two-point conversion kept the Rams’ deficit at five points, 24-19, with under seven minutes to play.

Hawaii effectively sealed the victory on the ensuing drive. Facing a third down deep in their own territory, the Warriors handed the ball to Cam Barfield, who broke through the line and raced 35 yards for a touchdown, restoring a two-score lead at 31-19 with just over two minutes remaining.

Colorado State’s final drive was stymied by the Hawaii pass rush, which recorded multiple sacks, including two by Tariq Jones, to extinguish any last hope for the Rams.

Harris was Alejado’s primary target, hauling in five passes for 109 yards and two scores. Cenacle added seven receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. The Warriors’ defense was led by linebacker Jamih Otis, who registered 11 tackles and two quarterback hurries.

For Colorado State, Brousseau finished 15 of 29 for 176 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Lloyd Avant provided a spark on the ground with 50 yards on eight carries. The Rams’ defense was led by Owen Long’s eight tackles, but the unit struggled to get consistent stops against Alejado and the Hawaii offense.

The victory gives Hawaii its second straight win and maintains its strong position in the Mountain West Conference. Colorado State, coming off a win over Fresno State, falls below .500 again as it prepares for a road test at Wyoming next Saturday. Hawaii travels to face San Jose State on Nov. 1.
