Michigan State at Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Interstat) — In a commanding display that defied pregame projections, the Indiana Hoosiers remained undefeated Saturday, dismantling the Michigan State Spartans 38 to 13 at Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback Fernando Mendoza orchestrated a near-flawless offensive performance for Indiana, completing 24 of 28 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns as the Hoosiers improved to 6-0. The Spartans, installed as a 27.5-point underdog despite being the betting favorite, fell to 3-3.

The game’s outcome was starkly different from the Interstat game simulator’s projection of a 30-25 Michigan State victory, though the ELO system heavily favored Indiana. The total score of 51 points went over the betting over/under line of 49.5.

Michigan State opened the game with a methodical 15-play drive, but it stalled in the red zone, forcing a 38-yard field goal from Martin Connington for an early lead. Indiana responded immediately, with Mendoza engineering a 10-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 13-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Williams Jr. to tie the game.

The Spartans reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter when Aidan Chiles connected with Nick Marsh on a 15-yard touchdown pass, making it 10-7. From that point forward, the game belonged entirely to the Hoosiers.

Indiana scored 31 unanswered points over the next two and a half quarters. Mendoza found Elijah Sarratt for a 24-yard touchdown to retake the lead. Just before halftime, running back Kaelon Black broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run, giving the Hoosiers a 21-10 advantage at the break.

The onslaught continued in the third quarter. On Indiana’s first possession, Mendoza hit Omar Cooper Jr. on a deep 48-yard scoring strike. He later found Sarratt again, this time for a 27-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 35-10.

Michigan State’s offense, which moved the ball at times, repeatedly failed to finish drives. Chiles finished 27 of 33 for 243 yards and a touchdown, but the Spartans’ running game managed just 68 yards on 34 carries. A promising fourth-quarter drive led by backup quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, who was 3 of 5 for 50 yards in relief, ended with another Connington field goal, this time from 34 yards, for the final margin. Indiana added a 31-yard field goal from Nico Radicic late in the fourth quarter.

Cooper Jr. was Mendoza’s primary target, hauling in eight catches for 115 yards and a touchdown. Sarratt finished with four receptions for 70 yards and two scores. The Hoosiers’ defense was relentless, led by Louis Moore with 11 tackles. Stephen Daley and Rolijah Hardy each recorded two sacks for an Indiana unit that consistently pressured the Spartan quarterbacks.

A crowd of 55,165 watched at Memorial Stadium as Indiana solidified its status as a national contender. The Hoosiers look to continue their perfect season next Saturday when they host UCLA. Michigan State, after its second consecutive lopsided loss, returns home to face rival Michigan.
