HOUSTON, Texas (Interstat) — Xai’Shaun Edwards rushed for 214 yards and two touchdowns to lift Houston Christian to a 20‑17 victory over Northwestern State on Saturday at Husky Stadium.
HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a game defined by a relentless ground attack and missed opportunities, the Houston Christian Huskies edged the Northwestern State Demons 20-17 on Saturday night at Husky Stadium, securing their first victory of the season.
The contest, a defensive struggle that starkly contrasted with the high-scoring affair projected by pregame models, was ultimately decided by the record-setting performance of Huskies running back Xai’Shaun Edwards. The sophomore from League City, Texas, carried the ball 30 times for a staggering 214 yards and two touchdowns, single-handedly powering the Houston Christian offense.
Both teams exited the game with identical 1-4 records, shedding the weight of winless starts to Southland Conference play.
From the opening drive, it was clear Edwards would be the focal point. He broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run with 11:58 remaining in the first quarter, answering an early Northwestern State score and setting the tone for the evening. His second touchdown was even more spectacular, a 47-yard dash through the Demons’ defense in the third quarter that gave the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish.
While Edwards dominated on the ground, the Huskies’ quarterback situation was a two-man affair. Starter Maddox Kopp, a Houston native, completed 6 of 15 passes for 73 yards, including a crucial 33-yard touchdown strike to Ja’Ryan Wallace just 31 seconds before halftime. That connection cut what was nearly a two-possession Northwestern State lead to a single point at the break. Jake Weir also saw significant action, completing 7 of 9 passes for 44 yards and managing the offense during several sustained drives.
The Huskies’ defense played a complementary role, coming up with two critical interceptions. Safety Jayven Anderson and cornerback Thio Georges each picked off Northwestern State passes, halting Demon drives and providing short fields for the Edwards-led offense.
For Northwestern State, the story was one of squandered chances and an inability to finish drives. The Demons marched into Houston Christian territory repeatedly but were often forced to settle for field goal attempts, one of which was successful. Quarterback Abram Johnston was a dual threat, rushing for 85 yards on 11 carries and passing for 124 yards with two touchdowns. But his completion rate of 15 for 32, along with the two interceptions, proved costly.
The Demons struck first, capping an impressive opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass from Johnston to Brendan Webb. They added a 33-yard field goal from Cooper Evans late in the second quarter to take a 10-7 lead, a margin that seemed it could have been larger given their time of possession and field position.
After the Huskies took the lead on Edwards’ long run in the third, Northwestern State mounted a response. Johnston engineered a 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter, culminating in a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ty Moore that tied the game at 17 with 12:21 remaining.
The Huskies’ subsequent drive stalled, but their defense forced a critical three-and-out from the Demons. From there, Houston Christian relied on its workhorse, feeding Edwards on six consecutive plays to bleed the clock and set up what would be the game-winning score. The drive stalled deep in Northwestern State territory, but kicker Ryan Zuckert calmly drilled a 34-yard field goal to put the Huskies ahead for good.
Northwestern State had one final opportunity, but Johnston’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete with under two minutes to play, sealing the victory for the home team.
The Demons’ ground game showed promise beyond Johnston, with Myion Hicks adding 69 yards on 12 carries. However, the offense’s inability to consistently convert through the air against a determined Houston Christian secondary was the decisive factor.
The game’s final score of 24 total points fell dramatically under the pregame over/under line of 54.5, a testament to the defensive efforts and offensive struggles that defined the evening. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 40-33 Houston Christian victory, while its ELO system gave the Huskies an 86.9 percent chance to win, contrary to the betting line which had installed Northwestern State as a 13-point favorite.
Both teams will look to build on the result as they continue their conference schedules next Saturday. Houston Christian travels to face McNeese State, while Northwestern State heads to Hammond, Louisiana, for a matchup with Southeastern Louisiana.
