Gardner-Webb at Eastern Illinois
CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs capitalized on a dominant first-half performance and a stellar day from running back Carson Gresock to defeat the Eastern Illinois Panthers 21-10 on Saturday at O’Brien Field.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a high-scoring affair with Eastern Illinois winning 42-32, and the Panthers entered as 4-point favorites. Instead, Gardner-Webb’s defense stifled the Eastern Illinois offense, holding the Panthers to a single touchdown and forcing multiple key stops.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs (3-2) set the tone early, marching 85 yards on their opening drive. The series was powered by the ground game, with Quasean Holmes carrying the ball four times for 31 yards before quarterback Nate Hampton capped it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Holmes with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter.
Gardner-Webb’s offense found its explosive element in the second quarter. After a three-and-out by the Eastern Illinois (3-2) offense, Gresock took a handoff on the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ first play from scrimmage and broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-0.
The Panthers managed to get on the board late in the half with a 42-yard field goal from Drew Schiller, but Gardner-Webb had a swift answer. On the ensuing possession, Gresock struck again, this time with a 55-yard scoring run, to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs a commanding 21-3 lead heading into halftime.
Gresock, a running back from Columbus, Ohio, was the offensive star of the game, amassing 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just six carries. His backfield partner, Quasean Holmes of Charlotte, North Carolina, added 74 yards on 19 attempts. Quarterback Nate Hampton of Advance, North Carolina, efficiently managed the game, completing 14 of 22 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground.
Eastern Illinois’s offense, which had averaged 31 points in its two previous wins, struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Cole LaCrue of Broomfield, Colorado, scored the Panthers’ lone touchdown on a 19-yard run late in the third quarter. He finished with 95 passing yards and led the team with 39 rushing yards. Running back Charles Kellom of Cincinnati, Ohio, was the workhorse, carrying the ball 16 times for 56 yards.
The Panthers’ defense, led by linebacker Ja’Wuan Nickson of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and defensive lineman Drake Van Hyfte of Annawan, Illinois, managed to create two turnovers, recovering a pair of fumbles. However, the Gardner-Webb defense was more impactful, recording multiple sacks and consistently disrupting Eastern Illinois’s offensive rhythm.
The second half was a defensive struggle. After LaCrue’s touchdown run cut the deficit to 21-10, neither team could muster another scoring drive. Gardner-Webb’s defense repeatedly shut down Eastern Illinois possessions in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.
The win brings Gardner-Webb’s record to an even 3-2, while Eastern Illinois also moves to 3-2 on the season. The combined score of 31 points fell well below the over/under line of 58.5.
Gardner-Webb will look to build on the road victory when it returns home to face Tennessee-Martin next Saturday. Eastern Illinois will travel to face Southeast Missouri State in its next contest.
