Gardner-Webb Routs Eastern Illinois Behind Gresock’s Big Day

CHARLESTON, Ill. (Interstat) — In a nonconference matchup that defied pregame projections, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs capitalized on a dominant ground game and a stifling defensive performance to defeat the Eastern Illinois Panthers 21-10 on Saturday at O’Brien Field.

The game, played before a crowd of 7,214, was a stark contrast to the offensive shootout many anticipated. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Eastern Illinois 42, Gardner-Webb 32, with the Panthers installed as 4-point favorites. Instead, the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ defense held firm, and their running backs broke free for game-changing plays.

Gardner-Webb set the tone early, orchestrating a methodical 11-play, 80-yard drive on their first possession. The drive was powered by the running of Quasean Holmes, who carried the ball four times for 31 yards, and was capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nate Hampton to Holmes. The score gave the Runnin’ Bulldogs a 7-0 lead with 4:51 remaining in the opening quarter.

The second quarter belonged to Gardner-Webb running back Carson Gresock, who turned the game with a pair of explosive touchdown runs. His first came on a 64-yard dash to the end zone with 12:36 left in the half, breaking the game open. Later, with 4:28 on the clock, Gresock found a seam and raced 55 yards for another score, extending the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ lead to 21-0.

Gresock, a native of Columbus, Ohio, finished the day with a staggering 137 rushing yards on just six carries, averaging 22.8 yards per attempt. His backfield partner, Quasean Holmes from Charlotte, North Carolina, provided a steadying force, grinding out 74 yards on 19 carries.

Eastern Illinois, struggling to find any offensive rhythm, finally got on the board just before halftime. A drive led by quarterback Cole LaCrue advanced to the Gardner-Webb 25-yard line, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ defense held, forcing a 42-yard field goal from Drew Schiller of New Lenox, Illinois, to make the score 21-3 at the break.

The Panthers emerged from halftime with renewed energy, putting together their most sustained drive of the day. They marched 80 yards on 11 plays, culminating in a 19-yard touchdown run by LaCrue, the quarterback from Broomfield, Colorado. The score, with 1:12 left in the third quarter, cut the deficit to 21-10 and provided a glimmer of hope for the home team.

That hope, however, was repeatedly extinguished by the Gardner-Webb defense. Eastern Illinois’s subsequent possessions ended with a series of punts and defensive stands. The Panthers’ offense was plagued by inconsistency, with quarterbacks Cole LaCrue and Connor Wolf combining to complete just 13 of 30 passes for 108 yards. The Gardner-Webb defensive front recorded multiple sacks, with Cahari Haynes, Robert Holtz, and Antonio O’Berry all getting to the Eastern Illinois quarterbacks.

While the Panthers’ offense sputtered, their defense kept them in the game with key takeaways. Defensive lineman Drake Van Hyfte of Annawan, Illinois, recovered a Nate Hampton fumble at the Eastern Illinois 1-yard line in the second quarter to prevent another Gardner-Webb score. Later, linebacker Ja’Wuan Nickson of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, pounced on another Hampton fumble in the fourth quarter.

Those turnovers were not enough to overcome Eastern Illinois’s offensive woes. The Panthers’ ground game, led by Charles Kellom of Cincinnati, Ohio, who had 56 yards on 16 carries, was unable to find consistent success against a disciplined Gardner-Webb front.

Gardner-Webb quarterback Nate Hampton, a 6-foot-6, 235-pound junior from Advance, North Carolina, managed the game effectively, completing 14 of 22 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground. His favorite target was Anthony Lowe of Grove City, Ohio, who hauled in six catches for 93 yards and was a dynamic presence in the return game.

With the victory, Gardner-Webb evens its season record at 3-2. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will return home to face Tennessee-Martin next Saturday. Eastern Illinois also moves to 3-2 on the season and will look to rebound on the road next week against Southeast Missouri State. The combined final score of 31 points fell well below the over/under line of 58.5.
