Dayton at Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Interstat) — Dayton scored 41 unanswered points, including 27 in a dominant second quarter, to cruise past Valparaiso 41-10 on Saturday at Brown Field.

The Flyers improved to 4-1 overall, while the Beacons fell to 1-4.

Dayton quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer, a Brookville, Ohio native, efficiently dissected the Valparaiso defense, completing 15 of 22 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. The Flyers’ offense was in full control from the outset, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and putting the game out of reach before halftime.

The scoring started quickly. On Dayton’s opening drive, Schondelmyer connected with Mason Hackett on a 56-yard pass to set up an 8-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Vrbancic.

The Flyers’ defense then contributed to the onslaught. On Valparaiso’s ensuing possession, Caron Tyler’s pass was intercepted by Dayton safety Mac Grant III, who returned it 43 yards for a touchdown.

The second quarter was all Dayton. Schondelmyer found Donovan Weatherly for a 4-yard touchdown, and after a Valparaiso fumble recovered by Dayton’s Joe Kingsbury, Hackett punched in a 1-yard rushing score. Luke Hansen added a 10-yard touchdown run, and Schondelmyer capped his day with a 20-yard scoring strike to Michael Mussari just before the half, giving the Flyers a 41-0 lead.

Valparaiso’s offense, which struggled for most of the game, managed to avoid a shutout with 10 points in the fourth quarter. Backup quarterback Rowan Keefe, from Park Ridge, Illinois, found tight end Brayden Welch for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Keefe later engineered a drive that ended with a 27-yard field goal from Luke Scoma as time expired.

For Valparaiso, Tyler started at quarterback and completed 14 of 22 passes for 94 yards while rushing for 36 yards. Keefe provided a spark in relief, completing 5 of 6 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Amir Simmons had a 63-yard reception to set up the late field goal.

The lopsided result defied pregame projections, as Valparaiso had been installed as a 15-point favorite. The combined score of 51 also went over the projected over/under line of 44.5.

Dayton looks to continue its winning streak when it hosts Butler next Saturday. Valparaiso travels to face Saint Thomas (Minn.) next.
