Dayton Routs Valparaiso in Dominant Road Victory

VALPARAISO, Ind. (Interstat) — The Dayton Flyers erupted for 41 points in the first half and cruised to a dominant 41-10 victory over the Valparaiso Beacons on Saturday afternoon at Brown Field.

Quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer orchestrated a near-flawless offensive performance for the Flyers, throwing for 202 yards and three touchdowns, all before halftime, as Dayton improved its season record to 4-1. Valparaiso, which managed all of its scoring in the fourth quarter, fell to 1-4.

The game was effectively decided in a stunning first-half display by the visitors. Dayton needed just over a minute to open the scoring, with Schondelmyer capping a quick drive with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Vrbancic.

The Flyers’ defense then compounded Valparaiso’s early misery. On the Beacons’ ensuing possession, quarterback Caron Tyler’s pass was intercepted by safety Mac Grant III, who returned it 43 yards for a touchdown, staking Dayton to a 14-0 lead with more than half of the first quarter still to play.

Valparaiso’s offense showed brief signs of life, driving deep into Dayton territory, but the drive stalled and Luke Scoma missed a 28-yard field goal attempt. The miss seemed to demoralize the Beacons while galvanizing the Flyers, who proceeded to score 27 points in the second quarter.

Schondelmyer found Donovan Weatherly for a 4-yard touchdown pass early in the period. Just moments later, after a Valparaiso fumble recovered by Dayton’s Joe Kingsbury, running back Mason Hackett plunged in from one yard out for another score.

The aerial assault continued as Luke Hansen broke free for a 10-yard touchdown run, and Schondelmyer delivered his third and final scoring strike of the day, a 20-yard connection with Michael Mussari with just over a minute remaining in the half. That sent the Flyers into the break with an insurmountable 41-0 advantage.

The second half was a formality, with Dayton content to run the clock. The Flyers’ offense, which had been so explosive before halftime, did not score after the break. Valparaiso, which cycled through quarterbacks Tyler and Rowan Keefe, finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter.

Keefe connected with tight end Brayden Welch on a 25-yard touchdown pass. The Beacons added a late 27-yard field goal from Scoma to avoid a shutout and provide the final margin.

Dayton’s offense was efficient and balanced. Schondelmyer, a Brookville, Ohio, native, completed 15 of 22 passes. Hackett was a versatile weapon, catching five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. Hansen led the ground attack with 57 yards and a touchdown on just six carries. Gavin Lochow added 48 rushing yards and caught five passes for 42 yards.

For Valparaiso, the offensive struggles that have plagued their season continued for three quarters. Tyler, from Temecula, California, completed 14 of 22 passes for 94 yards and threw one interception. Keefe, of Park Ridge, Illinois, provided a late spark, completing 5 of 6 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown, with a 63-yard completion to Amir Simmons setting up the late field goal. Jay Melchiori was the Beacons’ leading receiver with five catches for 48 yards.

Defensively, Dayton’s unit was stifling, creating two turnovers that directly led to 14 points. Grant’s pick-six was the defining play, while Eli Kirk also snagged an interception. Brandon Martin recorded a sack and recovered a fumble for the Flyers.

The lopsided result defied the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a much closer final score of Dayton 31, Valparaiso 25, and its ELO system gave Dayton a 64.5 percent probability to win. Valparaiso had been installed as a 15-point favorite, a line the Flyers covered with ease. The total score of 51 points went over the betting line of 44.5.

Dayton, which has now won four straight since a season-opening loss to Eastern Illinois, will look to continue its momentum when it hosts Butler next Saturday.

Valparaiso, mired in a four-game losing streak after a win in its opener, will try to regroup on the road next Saturday at Saint Thomas (Minn.).
