Villanova Rallies Past Elon for Road Victory

ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stunning special teams play and a dominant second half, the Villanova Wildcats overcame an early deficit to defeat the Elon Phoenix 29 to 21 on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.

The victory, sealed by a 97-yard kickoff return touchdown by Ja’briel Mace immediately after Elon had pulled within a point, improved Villanova to 3-2 on the season. Elon, which had been a 4-point pregame favorite, fell to 4-2.

The game unfolded in starkly different halves. Elon controlled the early proceedings, capitalizing on a big play to take a swift lead. On just their fourth play from scrimmage, Phoenix quarterback Landen Clark connected with Isaiah Fuhrmann on a 62-yard pass down to the Villanova 8-yard line. Two plays later, TJ Thomas Jr. powered in from 8 yards out to give Elon a 7 to 0 lead with 12:51 remaining in the opening quarter.

Villanova’s offense, led by the efficient play of quarterback Pat McQuaide, responded with a methodical 15-play drive that stalled in the red zone. The Wildcats settled for a 38-yard field goal from Jack Barnum early in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 7 to 3.

Elon answered with a lengthy drive of its own, chewing up nearly seven minutes of clock. The 13-play, 75-yard march was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by Clark, extending the Phoenix lead to 14 to 3 with 5:22 left in the half. That score held until the intermission, as both defenses tightened in the final minutes of the second quarter.

The second half belonged entirely to Villanova. The Wildcats’ offense found its rhythm, while their defense began to contain Clark and the Elon attack. Villanova took the opening possession of the third quarter and, after a punt, engineered a 13-play, 54-yard scoring drive. McQuaide found his favorite target, Luke Colella, for a 20-yard touchdown pass, bringing the Wildcats to within 14 to 10.

After forcing a quick three-and-out from Elon, the Villanova offense struck again with breathtaking speed. On the second play of the ensuing drive, McQuaide launched a deep pass to Colella, who hauled it in for a 42-yard touchdown. The score gave Villanova its first lead of the game at 17 to 14 with 1:44 left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats extended their lead early in the fourth quarter. A 44-yard completion from McQuaide to Lucas Kopecky set up a short field goal from Barnum, this time from 26 yards, making it 20 to 14.

Elon, facing a tightening clock, mounted a determined response. Clark engineered a 10-play, 80-yard drive, mixing passes to Jimmyll Williams and a key 28-yard completion to Thomas. Thomas finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, pulling the Phoenix to within a single point at 20 to 19 with 5:25 remaining in the game.

The elation for the home crowd was shockingly short-lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Villanova’s Ja’briel Mace fielded the ball and found a seam, exploding through the Elon coverage for a 97-yard touchdown return. The stunning special teams play, a dagger just 15 seconds after Elon’s score, pushed the Villanova lead back to 26 to 21.

Villanova added a final insurance score with just over a minute remaining, a 32-yard field goal from Barnum to make it 29 to 21. Elon’s last-gasp effort to tie the game ended when Clark’s pass was intercepted by Villanova’s Jamie Tyson in the end zone as time expired.

McQuaide, the Villanova quarterback from Solon, Ohio, was instrumental in the comeback, finishing the game 23 of 31 for 255 yards and two touchdowns. His primary receiver, Luke Colella from Wexford, Pennsylvania, was exceptional, catching 10 passes for 125 yards and both of those touchdowns.

For Elon, Clark from Radford, Virginia, provided a dual-threat, completing 14 of 21 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 32 yards and another score. Thomas was a workhorse, contributing 49 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground while adding 35 receiving yards.

The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had given Elon a narrow 50.90 percent probability to win and projected a final score of 27 to 26 in favor of the Phoenix. The combined score of 50 points also went over the betting over/under line of 51.5.

Villanova will look to build on this momentum when they return home to face Hampton next Saturday. Elon, meanwhile, will hit the road for a Coastal Athletic Association matchup at William & Mary.
