Summers’ 243 yards, 2 TDs power Sacred Heart to comeback win
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Interstat) — Mitchell Summers exploded for 243 rushing yards and two second-half touchdowns, powering the Sacred Heart Pioneers to a 32-14 comeback victory over the Howard Bison in a non-conference football game Saturday at Campus Field.
The Bison, who led 14-0 at halftime, saw their offense completely stifled after the break as the Pioneers reeled off 32 unanswered points. The loss drops Howard to 3-2 on the season, while Sacred Heart improves to 4-2.
Howard established control early, capitalizing on a Sacred Heart fumble late in the first quarter. Running back Anthony Reagan Jr. broke free for a 35-yard touchdown run with two minutes remaining in the period, capping a short drive set up by a Judah McJimpsey fumble recovery.
The Bison extended their lead just before halftime. Quarterback Tyriq Starks engineered a 12-play, 70-yard drive, which he finished himself with a 14-yard scoring run with 2:05 left in the second quarter. Reagan was the workhorse on the drive, carrying the ball six times for 40 yards. The Bison took their 14-0 advantage into the locker room, having limited the Pioneers to just a Matt Kling field goal in the half.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. On the first play from scrimmage after halftime, Summers took a handoff and raced 80 yards for a touchdown, slicing Howard’s lead to 14-13 just 12 seconds into the period.
Sacred Heart’s defense, which had been porous in the first half, stiffened considerably. The Pioneers forced three consecutive Howard punts in the third quarter, allowing their offense to seize control. Kling connected on field goals of 19, 25, and 22 yards in the quarter, the last two set up by long drives, to give Sacred Heart a 19-14 lead heading into the final period.
The Pioneers put the game away in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Jack Snyder, who provided a dual-threat complement to Summers’ ground game, found Payton Rhoades for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 7:36 remaining. Snyder finished the day completing 11 of 18 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 68 yards on 13 carries.
Summers delivered the final blow on Sacred Heart’s next possession, breaking free for a 49-yard touchdown run with 3:26 left on the clock. The Pioneers’ final points came on a safety when Howard was called for holding in its own end zone with 3:04 remaining.
Howard’s offense, which moved the ball effectively in the first half, was stymied after halftime. Starks was held to 80 passing yards on 11-of-21 attempts and was sacked twice in the second half. Reagan finished with a strong individual performance, rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries and adding four receptions for 39 yards, but the Bison could not sustain drives when it mattered most.
The game’s final score of 46 points surpassed the pregame over/under line of 47.5. Sacred Heart entered the contest as a 2-point favorite, and the result was in line with projections from Interstat, which gave the Pioneers a 72.9 percent probability to win.
Howard will look to rebound next Saturday when it travels to face Tennessee State. Sacred Heart embarks on a long road trip, facing FCS powerhouse Montana next Saturday.
